Ok, firstly sorry for creating yet another one of these threads, but any help would be so useful for my correct purchase of my next rig.

Currently I'm stuck with -
3200+ Single Core A64
1GB Kingmax PC3200
MSI K8N Neo2 Plat
Leadtek FX5900 AGP

As you can see I'm well and truely due for an upgrade. My issues stem from buying and not being able to play Rainbow Six and SupComm because of DX9.1 :(

Now I've been around for a while and know my stuff but I still haven't dabbled with overclocking so I am quite inexperienced when it comes to things like CAS timings and voltages etc.

Purely based on my budget I have picked the following items to build a rig under $1000 Australian Dollars -
Intel Core2 e4300
2GB Pair Corsair Twin2x XMS2 6400 (C4) 4-4-4-12
Albatron 8800GTS 320mb
Asus P5N-E or Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 rev3.3

My struggle is not with the speed I can get out of the CPU and im not planning on oc'ing the gfx card but I would like to know what I should be aiming for in a motherboard coupled with that ram? Since this CPU is a 1.8 starter, 3.3 performer, I'm happy for an inbetween of something close to a e6600 on stock cooling.

Any thoughts? Thanks for your replies.

P.S. If you find my post is sucky let me know and make it more coherent :)

I think you can reach 2.70GHz by raising your FSB to 300 and keeping all the default voltages while using stock cooling and any of those boards.

If you do that you won't need 800MHz RAM, 667Mhz would be enough and probably cheaper. But if you plan on switching your CPU latter on, or if the price isn't too much, stick with 800Mhz.

I have the same specs as you plan to buy and a bought 800Mhz and i'm running 300*9 with (3:4) so the RAM runs at 800Mhz, if you want to keep a (1:1) 667 is enough.

theres no reason not to get the fastest ram, its all the same price now anyway. Also, go with a 6320 or 6420 for the 4mb l2 cache.

Thanks also to thrawn...
I see what you mean about those 63xx 64xx chips, but is an overclock to bring them up to E6600 levels going to work with that FSB and my ram? Or will I OC the FSB and not the ram and have a non 1:1 ratio?

Out of the two motherboards you listed as options, the DS3 would probably be better for reaching a high FSB level.

Based on the trials and success with my current setup, and watching your budget as well, I would suggest:
Either an E6300 or 6400; or an E6320 or 6420.
Corsair is good ram but very expensive, perhaps another brand eg. OCZ, Mushkin.
8800GTS 320 is an excellent card.
Both mobos are good, for me, the DS3 has been a good, reliable board:)

Ahh thankyou thankyou!

Yes today I further re-adjusted my configuration. The ram is not so expensive for some reason, most 2GB matched pairs are about the same price. The 8500 modules from corsair I wanted if i got the 1GHz FSB from Intel are just to much money.

Intel E6420 CORE 2 DUO 2.13GHz/4MB - $259.00
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 - $152.00
Albatron GeForce 8800GTS 320MB - $410.00
Corsair 520w Modular PSU - $139.00
Corsair TWIN2X 2048MB XMS2-6400C4 RAM - $220.00
TOTAL $1,180.00

I'm really stoked that I can build such a great system that even has overclocking potential!

you could shave some off that price if you went the supertalent route.

it overclocks to ddr2-1000+
