OK: so here is my problem:

I think its about time I get some half decent headphones to use with my mp3 player and late at night so I don't disturb other people, but the main reason I need some is for use with a portable audio device.

So what do you guys recommend? I was looking at the Sennheiser HD497 but some people said they were uncomfortable :confused:. Also if someone could point out a good place that ships internationally for buying because prices in New Zealand are plain nasty.

Oh yeah: and not more than about $70 US would be good :)

Suggestions?

EDIT: oh yeah - I have a old pos amp that I use with my speakers currently - so thats not going to be like a good headphone amp right?
 
Do you have a local audio shop or electronics shop that carries the HD497? Perhaps they would let you open the case and try them on. In all honesty, they are decent for the price. They are a little "snug" fitting, but they do not have a lot of "clamping" force. They are open, so your ears won't get as itchey as with closed headphones.... but its a close call with the 497's (because they use fake leathers earpads).

On the plus side, they work good with portable devices. They are lightweight also.

Again, if you can find a place that sells them, check them out. For the price of about 40$us, they are not bad... but I have no idea what that translates into with your currency.
I'm sure there are others that are similar to the HD497's, so keep an eye out, and perhaps someone here will recommend one.

how is the bass? does it sound good while playing games? i was looking at this and the grado sr60 . i would have gone with grado but they are open cans.

Actually, the Sennheiser HD497's are also open headphones......

As for comparing them between the grado's, I really have not heard the grado's long enough to comment.

To be honest with you, the only "cheap" headphones I can Truely compare them with are older sony, like the V202 and V300... and a really cheap/old sansui (do they even exist anymore?).

The bass is decent at this price range. The cheaper sonys I own have more bass "impact", which is usually the more noticible, but its not accurate at all. The HD497's have the sonys beat by a long shot.

It's the overall sound that is the major noticible diffrence between these, and the higher end HD280pro's for example. There is very little sense of immersion and spaciousness. Music is not as defined, but rather just very similar and in your ear. Although then again, they go for 40$......... so... they belong in their price range.

As always, don't take my word for it, go and listen to them for yourself ^_^. =fun part

Yea that is a good price for ok closed headphones. Close to the HD497's and similar's.

:cool: :cool: But you would'nt see me wearing them while listening to an IPOD riding my bicycle, if you know what I mean :cool: :cool:

My cool factor would just drop to 0 if I ever did that. ^_^
