I just bought an opty 165 from Lupine in the FS threads and we got to talking about fah. Turns out he fold for Rage3D (oh well...at least he folds :) )and directed me to their guide for setting up the smp client with vmware.

All you linux pros look it over and let me know what you think. My new dually will be here in a day, and I'm ready to get that smp folding goodness up and running.
 
So far, this sucks :p Registered @ vmware, d/l vmware 1.02, installed, clicked run and......nothing. 99% of the options are grayed out. I can't enter serial #, create new vm, nothing except connect to a host....which I can't create :(
 
I just set it up yesterday morning after your posting.. works great on my system :) Used ubuntu 6.10 64bit
 
Vmware won't even let me go that far. I literally have no options other than connect to host. Uninstalled, reinstalled, downgraded to 1.01.....still nada.
 
Running Kubuntu with vmware just fine. However, did not get credit for 2 of my 1760pters..
 
I can't even install an iso. Can't open anything other than a new window, close the window, or exit.
 
After you register on vmware's site, do they send you a key or something so you can put in the serial number? My install keeps looking like the "trial period" is expired as I can't do anything with it.

Connect to Host is all I've ever used and it works just fine.

Yes, they email you the serial #.;)

I noticed I had this problem too after I rebooted windows. I had to wait until the Security Center Icon pops up telling me I dont have automatic updates on before "Local Host" showed up as an option in vmware.
 
I had mine up and running through vmware last night, but I tried to actually get it functional instead of just installing folding and being done with it. So I tried to get X to let me change to 1680x1050, and in the process of trying to configure X I must have set something wrong because I restarted and got a bunch of error screens that said no devices detected at the end. Ooops. I'll probly reinstall again tonight and just put the SMP client on and minimize the vmware window. :)
 
I found the problem. For whatever reason the zip file installation doesn't work. Since I have a horrible 30kb wireless internet connection, I went for the 20mb zip instead of the 145mb exe download. I d/l the exe and everything installed the wayt it's supposed to. Might want to update the guides to say "download the vmware .exe file" sure would have saved me a bunch of time, a miserable headache, and a slew of four letter words ;)
 
Just a quick update. After being a tard and not downloading the correct vmware software, everything else worked like a champ. The instructions above are pretty simple to follow for first timers working with linux and VMware.

While the server is running in the background and using the computer for normal tasks I am getting 19 - 19.5 minutes/frame on a 2605. After I shut down firefox, IM, etc my time/frame jumped (dropped?) down to 11 - 11.5 minutes/frame. WOOHOO! :D :cool: That's a cool 2200 PpD on the 1760 pt'ers.
 
Well it looks like I was suffering from the time dialation effect. The vm was just losing time and not actually running faster. So still ~19min/frame on a 1760 pt unit and that's alot better than 500-600 ppd I would get running 2 single instances in windows. I'm just greedy and wanted more :p

I finished my first SMP 2609 work unit using Ubuntu/VMWare last night at 10:00PM EST and it uploaded, but I didn't get credit either. :confused:
