Looks like yet another of my Seagate drives has bit the dust in my home storage server (ST3000DM001 model). While they've been going for about 2 years.. this is the 4th one to die in 6 months now and I'm tired of it. I stubbornly replaced the other 3 with new Seagate drives... starting with this one I'm changing manufacturers.

I'm torn between the HGST 3TB HDS723030ALA640 model and the WD Red 3TB drives at this moment. Ideally I would buy 3 and build a new RAIDZ pool. Unfortunately, budget is tight and right now it will only be 1 to replace the failed drive and order another 1/month. This means that whatever I buy will have to be added to the existing pool of Seagate drives, so I'm not sure how a WD Red drive will affect the overall storage performance.

Recommendations? Is there another drive I should be looking at performance/reliability wise?
 
HGST seems to be taking the market in being 24/7/365 live use from what u have seen from people lately. I used to sware by Seagate but from what i have been seeing they have been slipping the past few years. I know a lot of backup company's are starting to post info on drive useage. Waiting for the day Google starts giving feedback
 
The raid will work at the speed of the slowest drive in the system. So if the drive is faster it wont matter..Some people here have posted what great drives seagates are and that they only buy seagate and they only recommend seagates. I think you should get a new drive the same as the oens you would be buying in the future.. Which takes out seagate and WD as they change drives very often and you would find it harder to find matching drives. Hitachi's seem very reliable so thats a good choice, Toshiba also seems to be higher quality and I think would be a better choice as they dont chance drive parts all that often. My choice would have been hitachi but since WD bought them out, I am not sure what hanky panky those guys would be doing as they were the ones who started off on this path of changign components and parts and the same model can be any varying number of different drives.
 
Also had a 2 year old WD Blue 1TB EZEX model fail on me just today.

Was copying files from an external drive and it disappeared from the system and the file copy just stopped.

Not sure what to get either.

Seagate 2TB? WD Black? No HGST here =/

HGST and WD are great but do come at a premium. Maybe the Toshiba drives would interest you.
 
I've got a couple WD 2TB greens still chugging along, but switched to Seagate back when I started this server because at the time I also had 4 WD 500GB RE drives that decided to go out in rapid succession just after their warranty expired.

I'll take a look at the Toshiba options again also. How is the DT01ACA300 model? Or is there a specific model I should be looking for?

I'm not really as concerned about performance since I've moved most of my VM files over to separate arrays, which is one reason I'm planning on switching to striped RAIDZ pools instead of mirrors. The extra storage space will be nice.
