im looking over a few chips and im not really sure what the devil to go with.

one would assume that the high model chips are gunna be better but with intel price usually denotes quality and performance and right now those 570J's are kicking the shit out of everything out there.

What im doing is upgrading from my beloved clawhammer 3200+ and dfi lanparty.
performance wise, i have yet to see a game that hurts my clawhammer and my 6800 GT OC. but windows, multitasking and other windows based applications, especially compression has really suffered.
I came from an intel 3.0 ES where i was pulling a low multiplier and cranking the fsb up to a point where i was getting 950mhz overclock. now that being said there wasnt much i couldnt do and it felt fast. but gaming suffered. my little clawhammer just stomps the poo out of that 3.0 for gaming.

I'm weighing my options , speed, performance, overclocking, gaming. a truly mixed bag because not all 775 chips are going to do this, and only some of them i feel are going to overclock well enough that they scale bigtime to produce the performance i need.

that being said im looking at a few chips 1 of shich im gunna go with if the guy will follow thru with the deal we had agreed on already(but don't seem to want to hold up to his end of the agreement. which pisses me off)

540 Prescott 3.2E ES
650
640
570J - this is the king of kings last i knew and the big boy im working on right now.
other

these chips with be slapped on a brand new DFI 875P-T

the 570J will always be my first choice unless someone says the 650's or 640's are just as good and overclock just as good. its just that the deal for the 570 im working on is flakey and unstable,, its not me,, its the other party but thats ok i can wait.

so,, here i am.. in order to have a back up what do you intel gent's or those who have switched from amd64 to intel recommend.
i wouldnt ask if you recommend anything but im having a hell of a time finding reviews on those chips ive listed.

all of those with the exception of the 570J are sub 300, which is more than i like but within my budget..

so if the 570 falls thru.... which should i get,,,, or atleast provide me with a link to some benches and overclocking results so i can view them myself.

and dont worry im not hanging on your word,, im looking things over myself,, im just having issues find results for those above mentioned chips.

many many thanks in advance guys

if a 3950MHz ES (assuming prescott?) wasn't fast enough for you in games, no current prescott is going to be, either.

oh jesus i knew someone would say dothan.. :p the little chip that everyone thought could do it but failed.....

dude when you get a dothan and have proof to back it up come tell me dothan. cuz everyone is sitting here pumping a chip that they dont have, nor do they know anything about. go find the desktop reviews for that chip,, its NOT all that. the 570J chips are still kicking it,, and the 939 amd's are still mopping the floors with almost everything.
cuz every single thing i have seen on dothans both stock and overclocked are NOT impressive..... not at all. ok sure its a 2.2ghz chip overclocked,, yeah ok i see that,, but 10ghz or 2 ghz... you take a pile of ccrap and spray it with air freshner its still gunna be crap.

go get one guy...and then come here and post how "awesome" it is.

Take a 3.8ghz 570J throw it on water and take it to 4.5ghz i guarentee you that it will take every other chip on the market and just kick the ever loving snot right out of it... not to mention that those 570J's are kick 6 and 7 ghz.... thats not speculation,, thats proof and ther eis tons of that out there to back it up. the scaling on these 570J and other 5xx and 6xx chips is just frigginn awesome when you overclock them.

can someone who actually has some intel 775 chip please post here they thoughts of the chips please. stock vs overclocked

dothans and amd64 excluded please.
sorry if that sounded rude i believe in proof in hand.. and the dothans are just unproven, and problematic right now. the 6xx and 5xx chips are proven its just a matter of which one since fucking intel brings a new one out each week and they all perform differently.

but...
Nobody is hitting 5 or 6 GHz reliably or often or stabily.
Yet, anyway...
Which is why I said, a 4GHz northwood would feel no different than a 4.5GHz Prescott to you. I'd jsut wait for whatever dual core cpus are coming out from both camps.

uhh.. dothan is a very good chip. what benchmarks have you been looking at? its quite impressive at 2.5ghz. how is it unproven and problematic right now? i would like to see your sources.

i havent seen any p4's around here hit 5-6ghz (im not looking very hard.. however if it was common place i would have noticed by now).... but thats probably what it would take to beat a dothan running at half the clock. not to mention the heat that the p4 is pumping out... its rediculous.

the only other recommendation for the a64's would be the venice core thats about to come out.

now Jason you did hit on something that i thought about last week. the up and coming venice chips...... one of the guys in another forums, and ill have to find that thread, had one and was pulling 3.2ghz,, of course i think he was vapo chilling
but again right now the Venice is not a reality in the market. that i am aware of.
over all i realise the dothans are gunna be impressive. its the low power low heat chip making waves...but.. its the same mentallity that....

a little Japanese rice burner when you shove $15,000 into the motor and gearbox becomes quite a bloody fast car..... but when you take an american car, oh the corvette or viper...right off the factory line. or ram air firebird totally decked out and yes sticking maybe a few thousand into the motor.,(unless you have been around one of these then dont say nuttin)
you just cant even touch the big boys with that little car thats pushing its motor so hard its just gunna blow.

i would take a dothan if it did what everyone claims its doing. but i have yet to see anyone make it do what they say.
same with the venice,, its 1 guy had 1 chip,,,

but i highly doubt a chip running 4.5ghz+ will be bested by a little 2ghz chip.

remember Intel makes you pay for performance, and not pay a little ,, you pay with your soul,, and seeing that the dothans are under 200 and up,,, well.... not to mention their entire purpose was focused on low cost low power notebooks,, im just cringing at the thought of using one as a DTR

jason if you can throw me some links for some recent tests of the dothans doing what people are claiming id be more than happy to read it.
this is the reason for this thread... not you or i or anyone just sittng here spouting off about chips we dont personally have or chips that have no basis for the bragging thats going on. i believe in the physical truth of hardware. the truth is there for the 570J 560J and some of the other new LGA775 chips. they scale like crazy when you overclock. Meaning performance increases a large amount when they are overclocked

ok found the anandtech review of the dothan stock and overclocked.. fased against all other 775 and 939 amd chips.

its really a mixed bag with OpenGL games being best obviously,, (which i saw another review show the same thing, opengl games were kickin ass but DX games,, were suffering.. possibly video card related i imagine.)

over all you gotta give prop's to wha that little chip is doing... but the performance that i am seeing is so up and down and all over the place, it really makes getting one hard to justify.... for me at least...

im still researching so who knows what will come in the next few weeks.

hardocp also did a review... i dunno if you check that out aswell.

you get that chip to 2.5 ghz.. the only cooling investment would be a good northbridge cooler.... a northbridge cooler! lol...

2.5 is its max though..... its only downfall is the price. that fucker is expensive.

the venice i believe is worth the wait... just to see what kind of numbers ppl get with it. i wanna see ppl get 3ghz on air. :)
