i just digged up a maxtor hard drive that was made on June 21 1996. that's more tahtn 10 years ago, it belong to my very first computer, so i have a deep relationship with it. i'm wondering what i should do with it. should i keep it like it is (it can be a valuble antique) or should i listen to the voice "i need a window, so i can look outside" it still have win 95 on it. should i mod it or cherish it.
 
Mod it!
A 3.5" hdd isn't going to become valuable. A full height 5.25" drive might be one day....

hahah, my aunt has a full size 5.25 inch HDD at her house. It came from their first computer to, they plan on just using it for skeet shooting, as per my suggestion. They wanted to know the best way to get rid of the data on it(client info from a business), and what better way to get rid of a harddrive than to blow it to smithereen with a 12 gauge?
 
It's one of the big ones that takes up two 5.25" bays? Rip out the guts and put a computer in it! :D

How awesome would it look putting that on the table next to your screen at a LAN? Rewire and route all the in/outputs from the motherboard and whatever cards you have through the IDE port, then put a breakout box on the end of an IDE cable so it looks like a stock hard disk from the outside.

I think I have one of those around...maybe I'll try that myself.
 
I say polish up the top til it looks like chrome and mount it in a very visible place in a mod. Use it as picture storage or something. Or heck, get an external hard drive enclosure and throw it in there. Nothing goes to waste!
 
so many great ideas. at first i wanted to do a window mod but when i plugged it in just to see wha;t on it i notice taht it runs hotter than fever and it's louder than my mom...and your mom combined. :D still i think i;ll go with the window mod. i might post a worklog or something.
 
Window mod sounds like a good one for this drive. The idea of fitting an entire computer into a hard drive sounds promising, but you'd need really tiny board for that, and probably microdrives for the operating system and storage. Not sure how you'd find a mobo small enough to begin with, but hey, if you can go for it.
 
Its still doable, there are motherboard small enough to do it, look into "Mini-flex-ATX" formfactor boards.

As long as you get a motherboard that fits (can't be much wider than 5 inches), there should be enough room for a standard sized video card and one or two laptop hard disks.

Use an external power brick and CD-ROM, and you have a PC :D
 
I think I still have some of my old < 300MB hard drives laying around in the basement. Those are ancient. I remember having to compress them so I could get windows 95 on. And then the defragging every other day for speed!
 
check out the new nano-itx mobos. I think I remember reading that they're no bigger than a 120mm fan. :)
 
3.5" drives are still a miracle to me. I should dig out the 8" floppy from my TRS Model II :p
