Gaming is the one area in the preview that is a disappointment. As you can see, the standard benchmarks games under XP64 Preview were 4% to 51% slower than 32-bit, with the average speed about 20% slower. It is far too early to reach any conclusions in this area, but there is a lot of driver optimization to be done to make up this kind of Delta. With the CPU and memory providing faster 64-bit performance, we have to believe the drivers play a big part in this disappointing gaming performance.
Considering this is like an alpha release build along with buggy release drivers I like what i'm seeing. That said I won't buy a 64 bit chip right now, give it a year or so, imo.
With 3D Mark my score dropped from 21500 in XP32 to 15000 in XP64 using a 9800XT. But that's using drivers supplied in the Op system by Microsoft so no real suprise there. Once we get optimized released drivers from ATI, that will certainly change.
I was impressed with the media encoding performance. They got a 15.5% increase from 32bit unoptomized. I'd say that's pretty good. Maybe the A64 will take a chunk out of the P4 lead in that department.
