I need some advice, my spouse has... er... had a 3 piece speaker set, 2 satelites, and a subwoofer, but we got a couple of new cats (the shelter had a buy one, get one free deal), and they decided to play with the speaker cables, consequently, both speakers are now destroyed, but the sub still works and the remote volume control too. What I was wondering, is if I could just buy a 2 piece speaker set, and plug them into the sub, and have the whole thing work work? That way, I could just get a much better quality 2 piece set and then the overall system would be better. Thanks for your help and advice.

Yes, that should be workable. The only thing is you would need to find some that compliment the weak areas of the sub and vice/versa or you will have an uneven sound, either too much bass or too little at the frequencies you want.

Also, take into account, that the sub probably doesn't have that great of an amp, and so, while it will probably still sound good (likely better than the original speakers), they probably won't be getting enough power to really sound like they should. This is assuming you buy some bookshelf speakers.

There is a slight possibility that you could damage the amp on the sub if you get speakers with too high of impedence as well.

In light of all of that, its still not a bad way to go. You might check out the Athena brand speakers (Amazon is a good place to check), or maybe check on the Polk R15s from Outpost.com (they routinely go on sale for about $50 for a pair). They're both low cost, but good quality. I wouldn't recommend buying a very expensive pair, as they just won't live up to their potential.
