AMD working with Handbrake Developers to implement OpenCL

Seems AMD is busy afterall, looks AMD is working with Handbrake developers to implement an OpenCL codepath for Trinity GPU & most likely discrete GPUs.

If this works out, and the final video quality doesn't suck (which it does not seem to for the first time), it's quite an exiting developement. Looks like a type of application where AMD's large number of shaders can really help (like bitcoins).

Thoughts?
 
Finally a potential alternative to nVidia's craptastic h264 encoder.
 
That would make me happy since I've yet to see a GPU accelerated video encoder that doesn't produce just mediocre results. I just don't see why its taken this long when a CPU can produce great results and GPU's are supposed to be SO much faster at this kind of work.

This has been my observation as well. The only alternative is more CPU cores.
I have been eyeing the 8 core mainly to transcode with HandBrake.
If you can get REAL GPU acceleration with openCL this would be great. But there is a downside. I do all my video work in Linux because the transcode usually goes faster; all things remaining the same. AMD has some work to do on the Linux end. Amd is behind with linux drivers (performance wise) but they have allocated resources and manpower into improving this. That is a good sign.
