Hey all,

Several weeks back I was attempting to vm my HTPC. I got close... but in the end I was only able to stream about 5 minutes of live TV before the Ceton card stopped working. Rebooting the windows VM fixed the issue for another 5 minutes...

Reading more about vmware and PCI pass through... I think i was the cause of the issue from the get go...

My setup was white box based using an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz processor and a ASRock 970 EXTREME4 as the motherboard. This processor does have AMD-v enabled and checked to ensure it was turned on in the bios.

My question is... Should I have tried an intel chip and used intel-v? Or does it not matter to vmware if it's either amd-v or intel-v?
 
pass thru is vt-d (intel) or iommu (amd), not the ones you called out. if it ever worked, presumably the mobo/cpu/bios support it, but video cards and such are very dodgy for pass thru it seems (lots of other folks with similar issues.)
 
I would love nothing more then to get vmware running. Currently using a mix of virtual box and vmware workstation (trail at the moment).

If i can swing the full blown version of vmware work station i would remove virtual box and kind of be happy with the setup.

I suppose i could buy the UBS version of the ceton but that's a big upfront cost for consolidation.
 
990 and 970 chipsets should all support IOMMU. Passing cards through also has a lot to do with the guest OS. I don't know anything about that card but if it has Linux drivers, try passing it to a Linux guest instead. Graphics cards are particularly problematic under Windows, but apparently others have had good results with Linux and Mac guests, same might be true for your capture card.
 
I've passed through a TBS 6984 Quad DVB-S2 tuner to a Windows 7 VM on ESXi5. The underlying hardware is an MSI 970FX motherboard with an Athlon X2 250 CPU. The card is seen by MediaPortal exactly as it was when it was running on the same physical hardware using just Windows 7.

I also want to pass a GPU through to a Windows 7 VM on a different ESXi5 server but I haven't had any time to play with that, and from what I've read seems like it'll be more of a challenge.

This is very interesting to me. What do you run on the VM with the tuner passed through? You pass the signal on to something else?

The VM is running Windows 7 at the moment with MediaPortal as the TV server (may change this to a Linux OS as a friend is having real troubles with MediaPortal at the moment.) The MediaPortal server then broadcasts to MediaPortal client/XBMC installed on PC's on my LAN. At the moment I'm trying to get all this running on a couple of ESXi5 servers and have quiet thin clients in the Living Room/Bedrooms/Kitchen etc as the frontends.
 
You have to realize that applications like this are about at the same location on the priority tree as, say, making ESX sing the my-little-pony song on boot. It's just not what ESX was really designed for.

the hardware choice is probably immaterial, in other words, it's the software.
 
I thought for sure making esx sign the 'my little pony' song was on the vsphere 5 roadmap! I am VERY disappointed!!!

He is having stability issues streaming live/recorded TV between MediaPortal & XBMC on 2 physical machines, he isn't using ESXi. I'm not that far along with my setup so haven't been able to test it yet. I've had no issues so far with ESXi, it happily passes through my DVB-S2 card, LSI 9200-8E HBA and hopefully a GPU when I get round to testing that so that I can virtualise my TV server/File server & all of my desktops onto just 2 PC's.
