DigiTimes has more news on the upcoming naming scheme from AMD. The company is shedding the “64” and picking up a few letters and numbers in its place.

AMD's new naming scheme will start with a letter to indicate the product level; G represents premium product, B represents intermediate product and L represents value product. A second letter will indicate the product's power consumption, with P representing over 65W, S around 65W and E less than 65W, noted Sobon

Because, new naming schemes always help get a 12-month-late product out the door quicker.

Quit throwing me little tidbits AMD, just get the damn product out the door already. :rolleyes:

To me the first number is slightly pointless

G - Phenom
B - Athlon
L - Sempron

Thus you could not have something like Athlon X2 BE-7350

L could only have a value of 1 for the first number
B could have 1 or 2
G could have 6 or 7

In my opion if they are going to use number to represent stuff it should have just been the number or cores as having that number also denote the processor class is pointless as that is what the first letter is already doing.

While I'm for naming schemes to give people a little more info about the product by looking at the name I don't like the idea of needing a chart to figure out what you are reading. I liked the old naming scheme. They could have just started chaning the X2 or X4 or what ever number of cores it had. Maybe added one more letter to that something like XL2 for lower power consuption.

This was stupid when Intel did it, and (zomg!) still is. I love AMD and keep hoping for the massive rebound, but until then, I'll keep buying C2Ds. :(

You beat me to the punch. I was thinking the same thing about the BS line of processors.

So they went from a naming scheme that was simple, logical, and representative (although a bit long), and switched to a naming scheme that is complex, confusing, and requires you to remember what individual letters and numbers represent.

What was wrong with X2 = dual core, and a number that represents its performance?

Names for products are worthless without the products....

Why can't they ever do a scale that everyone understands like:

A = high end
B = mid range
C = value

By doing G, B, L they are just trying to confuse the public so big box salesmen can unsuspecting customers that the 'L' series is the best chip to buy. Then in 6 months I get a call and have to tell the nice people wondering why their PC is so slow. that they bought a cheap-ass Sempron, 256mb of RAM, 5400rpm drive, running Vista and what the implications are.

Half the time people are so fed up with it that I end up building them a proper computer. Money for me, but it's a shame to be recycling these crapola PC's that are not that old.

Can't you just see it now...

"The new AMD AthlonFBS, and coming soon, the AMD AthlonVPRWRE" (ok that one is easy...)

Geez... they're actually paying people to come up with these ideas?

This naming scheme is just idiotic. The letters seem like they were all arbitrarily made up.

No, AMD has chosen to be diverse and open to all people with L, G, and B.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender, or The LGBT Theory, used to interpret and analyze literature. I'm a fan of Marxist Theory, myself, but there are many theories in practice today.

Well, they still need a T though. Too bad it's not Intel (Socket T). :D

Can we get another Barcelona picture soon, along with a rosy projection of the future? I love pixel and wish launches!

This is beyond comical !!! Is it really april fools already ? No ? Must be another attempt at advertising (confusing the customer) from AMD marketing. :D

Its almost,or maybe it really is...... Its almost like they want to fail !

What next ? The AMD "Trashlon" ? :p I am gald I dont work for BB anymore.I'd hate to have to sel this garbage to the public.(the marketing,not the chips) :D
