AMD Pitcairn Specifications Surface
The launch of AMD's Radeon 7800 series is on course for March, as AMD wants to complete the launches of the entire Radeon 7000 series before NVIDIA even has its first GPU out. Radeon HD 7800 will be designed to occupy key price points in the sub-$300 market segment, where it strikes price-performance sweetspots for gamers. Central to this series is a new 28 nm GPU, codenamed "Pitcairn", from which will be derived three SKUs: the Radeon HD 7870, Radeon HD 7850 2 GB, and Radeon HD 7850 1 GB. The specifications look like this:

Radeon HD 7850

20 Graphics CoreNext Compute Units, 1280 stream processors
80 TMUs, 24 ROPs (de-linked from the memory bus, of course)
256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, 2 GB and 1 GB variants
Clock speeds of 900 MHz core, 1250 MHz (5.00 GHz effective) memory

Radeon HD 7870 specifications follow.

Radeon HD 7870

22 GCN CUs, 1408 stream processors
88 TMUs, 24 ROPs (de-linked from memory bus)
256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, 2 GB
Clock speeds of 950 MHz core, 1375 MHz (5.50 GHz effective) memory

Some time after March, AMD will likely launch a "Radeon HD 7890" SKU, which will be based on the Tahiti GPU.

Hmm specs seem to point to the 7850 having 63% of the performance of a 7970 and the 7870 69%. So they could actually be slightly faster than the 69x0 counterparts when dealing with shader heavy games.

what chance of a special addition with 4GB of memory?

how long till an OEM produces one to try and steal the limelight?

I want that much memory for GPU rendering on blender/cycles.
 
That really looks like 24GCUs (1536 shaders) and yield problems to me. It would explain why they launched the 77xx cards before the 78xx ones though.

Well, you have to remember, the Northern Islands architecture was more efficient with fewer shaders over Evergreen (1536 vs 1600). Also, we know that Southern Islands is even more efficient (somewhat; 50% more shaders for ~50% performance increase).

I don't see a 4GB version of any of the 7800 cards, maybe the 7890.

One thing is, the notice of the 7890 (I still wonder if there will be a 7930). It will most likely be a 24CU/1536 shader/32 rop/96 tmu part (like the 6970).

The launch order was set long ago and it was made with economy on their mind.

First the highest lvl to grab the performance crown, then the lowest of the new tech because that is usually the volume seller, last the mid-high cards since although it is important for us geeks, it really isn't such a money maker for them in comparison.
