Not to start a flame war but what would be a better performer....

Intel Celeron D "320" 2.40 GHz, 533MHz FSB, 256K L2 Cache Processor - Retail

or

AMD Mobile Athlon XP 2600+, 266 MHz FSB, 512K L2 Cache Processor,45 Watt - OEM

Stock for Stock...I'd say take the Athlon XP 2600+ but if you plan on overclocking I would say the Celeron D 2.4. I have read in the forums that some lucky people or approaching 4GHz with the 2.4's & it easily achieves 3.5GHz supposedly. So overclocked along with a faster than Athlon XP FSB I think the Celeron D would be better. You could overclock the Athlon XP but I feel it is more enjoyable with the Celeron D.

2nd. If you buy an Athlon XP the motherboard technology is fastly becoming oudated & replaced, plus their will not be very many more upgrades in the future I think going with a new Athlon XP system. However with that being said if you go the Celeron D route it buys you a little more time in the upgrade market because you can always put a faster Pentium 4 or Extreme Edition processor in it later. If its an LGA775 Celeron D setup than obviously that would be the best bet for keeping current for now with technology and allowing future upgrades. I am not sure about Celeron D's in LGA775 format but I believe it is out or to be available soon.

These are merely my opinions neither fact or proven but a quick personal response...others are free to dis-agree or modify my statements with personal experiences.

Ah, I just noticed you stated a mobile XP cpu. I guess you are interested in overclocking it otherwise why would you want the mobile version?

In that case except for buying an XP motherboard that I think will be fastly aging soon. An overclocked mobile XP would be an excellent performer especially for games. But I don't despise the Celeron D's & think they will do a decent job if overclocked. Keep it stock and Athlon XP all the way for gaming if you don't care about upgrade options later.

I'd say Celeron D because that's whats in my machine and it's fine for gaming.

Fine for gaming is subjective. A friend of mine was happy playing on a 2.5GHz Celery and a Radeon 7000. I never could be.

Really the Athlon XP is the better choice. The Celeron D can be made to perform with some overclocking, but stock it's pretty weak.

Fine for gaming can be subjective...I've played with many different CPU's, and the Celeron D isn't bad at all. The difference would be unnoticable to the casual one, maybe not for the hardcore, though.

I am not saying that a Celeron will give you a bad experience playing games. If you've got a high end video card then sure. But a Celeron with a low end video card is pretty rough.

you didnt mention if you were going to overclock or not, since you didnt overclock your p4 it wouldnt be a safe assumption that you will. if you are overclocking, this thread really should be in the overclocking forum as being in the intel forum could possibly give you biased replies.

that being said, i would recommend you the athlonxp mobile (i have built a 2.4ghz celeron D overclocked to 3ghz so bare with me) whether its at stock speeds or overclocked and heres my reasoning:

1) in my experience with both processors, the 2600+ axpm runs cooler than the 2.4ghz celeron D, which is the better choice for a near silent pc.

2) benchmark wise a 2.6ghz axpm is better than a 3.8ghz celeronD

cpu sandra benchmarks for the 3.8ghz came from this thread.
http://www.tech!!!!!!.com/forum/showthread.php?t=391

the 2.6ghz axpm scores came from my machine and i am too lazy to upload screenshots so youll just have to trust me when i say i am not lying about my scores.

3.8ghz celeronD
ARITHMETIC:
- Dhrystone ALU : 9869MIPS
- Whetstone FPU : 2723MFLOPS
- Whetstone iSSE2 : 4688MFLOPS

MULTIMEDIA:
- Integer iSSE2 : 21414it/s
- Float iSSE2 : 25261it/s

2.6ghz axpm
- Dhrystone ALU : 10718MIPS
- Whetstone FPU : 4070MFLOPS

MULTIMEDIA:
- Integer: 24311it/s
- Float: 25984it/s

how these sandra scores affect your decision is up to you (whether or not benchmark scores mean anything to you), im just supplying the numbers =)

3) lga775 is more upgradable but i doubt youll get one because the memory is more expensive and the video cards are more expensive and if you can afford those premiums then why are you getting a celeron D?? a athlon64 or a s468 p4 would be better choices.

4) it doesnt have HT! if youre gonna get a intel you should definately get one with HT :)

No the Celeron-D is not a bad chip at all. I think what he is trying to get across is just because you say it is fine for gaming based on your level of experience does not equate to the same thing to someone else, ie it is subjective to your personal view. The Celeron is going to have to be clocked up pretty high in order to compete with an Athlon XP in the 2.2 to 2.4GHz range. Personally I would not waste my time with a Celeron-D if I was using it as a game box, newer hardware or not.

I would go with the Athlon XP just because it gives better gameplay and uses less power in the process.

Exactly. That's all I was trying to say. I like Celeron D's well enough. I would use one in a machine no problem depending on what it will be used for.

You seem like you're going to overclock, so the 2600+M all the way. With decent cooling you'll get it to 2.6GHz maybe more, and the D will never be able to clock high enough to beat that without melting down your local power plant. :p

Oh, yeah, I get what you guys are saying. No problems here, it is about personal preference. It's all good! :)
