AMD guy switching over, and needs some help!

I have always had an AMD processor. I love them, but my 4800+ and/or mobo might be going out, and so I need new components. I wish i could stay with AMD and get a Phenom, but they just don't cut it anymore.

So I need some help. There is much discussion about Dual vs. Quad, and i think that my bank account will settle that debate for me when the time comes, because I can get an E6750 for almost $100 cheaper than the Q6600.

The main question I have is about Future-Proofing my investment. I seem to remember reading about Intel changing the socket for their processors in a year or so, or something like that. I just don't want to be stuck with a motherboard that doesn't have an upgrade path.

What does everyone here recommend? I'd want to keep my budget to around $600 for the processor, heatsink, motherboard, and RAM. Like I said, the choice between dual or quad shouldn't be too hard, but the motherboard will be.

oh yea... also, what is the difference between 1333mhz FSB and 1066mhz FSB.... i haven't had to worry about FSB in a long time.... i'm sure the 1333 will be faster, but will it affect the kind of RAM i can get?
 
The bus speed is quad pumped from the "base". So 1066 is 266, 1333 is 333. DDR2 runs at twice the base. So the "standard" DDR2 800 is good up up to a 400 FSB which would be 1600 on the CPU. The clock speed is multiplier x bus speed(base). So the 1333 is not always going to be faster.

The die shrink of the current CPU's should work fine on P35 chipsets, currently there is an issue with the nVidia 6xx ones not working. AFAIK there is not planned workaround for that issues currently.

From what I gather there will be a new socket for the nehalem but since there are no motherboards for a CPU that is not even out yet....

For that Budget you can get a Q6600 ($280) p35 MB ($99) 2x 1gig ram ($50) Thermalright HR-01 heatsink ($50) 120mm fan ($15)
With these parts you can O/C to 3.4ghz+

I think I will get the Q6600, with 2gb of G.Skill ram, the abit IP35 Pro, a Thermaltake ultra-120 extreme, and a CORSAIR CMPSU-520HX PSU. i've also got a 8800GT coming, so that should last me for a while.

it's going to run me about $750, because i included the new power supply (i've only got a 400 watt cheap POS right now), but it should be a monster of a computer
 
Id rather have a e6750 at stock vs a q6600 at stock. If you get a Q6600 you must OC it.

You've got to be kidding me. A stock E6750 runs at 2.66Ghz while a stock Q6600 runs at 2.4Ghz. Are you trying to tell me that the extra 270Mhz of the E6750 is noticeable?!?!?

Sounds good. Be sure to get the Q6600 from clubit.com, since they guarantee the G0 stepping. It requires less voltage and runs cooler -- a good thing whether you're OC'ing or not. You'll definately hit at least 3Ghz with that setup.

And the faster FSB... most games don't even take advantage of 4 cores. Plus it's cheaper.

That wasn't the question. The question was whether or not you notice the difference between 270Mhz of clock speed or not. Despite the higher FSB, I doubt you'd notice the difference. And, as everyone knows, more and more software will be taking advantage of quadcores. Oh... and I know its cheaper -- I have one. ;)
