AMD Enhanced Sync: Anyone Using It? Does it Work?

So AMD recently released Enhanced Sync, which I believe if similar to Nvidia's Adaptive Sync or Fast-Sync.

I enabled it in the driver Global Settings, but I'm not sure if it's working or not. First, I was not certain if you should enable VSync in the game or have it disabled. Disabled, I still saw tearing (above refresh rate) so I don't think thats it. But enabled, I would get 60fps locked and I couldn't say for sure Enhanced Sync was working. At least with Nvidia Fast-Sync, framerate is still unlocked with VSync on, you you have a visual indication it's enabled.

I mean, I tried a few games and I sort of thought latency was better with it on, but it could be placebo with this kind of stuff. Anyone else try it or know if it's working?

Yeah pretty much the same thing, its a combination of triple buffering and v sync. Traditionally rendering to the monitor is done with 2 buffers, front and back, with the introduction of the 3d buffer. Now using triple buffering and v sync pretty much does the same thing but v sync has a terrible habit of increasing input lag, which fast sync and enhanced sync avoids.

If ya got a free sync or gsync monitor always use these before using v sync, always will give you better results. now they are still not perfect, if the frames are being rendered too fast ya still can get stuttering. (way too fast, like 2 times the frame rates over the monitor refresh rates).
 
Well it works different than Adaptive Sync from Nvidia, it allows FPS above your refresh rate, that can reduce latency. Also noticeable difference in tearing with it on when above the refresh rate. Experimented in both Tomb Raider and Dirt Rally with and without Freesync. It improves smoothness when outside the Freesync range noticeably for me, still Freesync looks the smoothes when within the range. Dirt Rally on Ultra 4K 2xMSAA benchmark average 77 fps with highs around 100 fps, without Enhance Sync tearing was obvious, with it on much less. Tomb Raider with lower FPS 4K, Very High Preset but with no motion blur enhance sysc looked fairly decent but Freesync made the biggest difference.

I will have to explore this more, still do not have a good handle on this new feature yet. I think I will still prefer to limit the frame rate to the Freesync range but will use enhanced sync as well mostly for the lower ranges.
 
OK, I think it may be working (VSync enabled in game).

Tried Rise of Tomb Raider and it definitely felt better I would say. This is a game I was just about getting around 60 fps, so probably the best example. Also tried Prey, and it was nice, but I haven't played enough of this game to say for sure.

It certainly doesn't seem to be hurting anything, so I will leave it enabled and try more games.
 
I figure using RTG FreeSync Windmill demo would clear things up. Except with Enhanced Sync turned on it locks up within seconds, sometimes instantly requiring a reboot. I turned off the monitor FreeSync to see if I could get in the program, I can with enhanced sync turned off (same as with FreeSync turned on) but a no go with Enhanced Sync turned on - quick crash.

Now I don't use the in game Vertical sync with it and it seems to be doing something without vertical sync turned on. I wished there was more information on this, RTG is just too lite on the particulars.
 
I'm not sure the Windmill demo would clear things up. Enhanced Sync is more about removing latency, so you need to be playing in order to feel the difference.

I agree there should be more information. The improvement I saw in Tomb Raider seems more than placebo, as I've been benchmarking this game a bunch the past month and it definitely felt smoother and more responsive. Also played GTA V and it felt nice. So I have to assume it's working, I just wish there was some way to know for sure.
 
That is the thing, if it is placebo level notice then probably not much benefit. I am not sure what to think of it.

Anyways went to Doom, Enhance Sync did not do anything, turned on Vertical Sync and had freezes, long pauses (unplayable). Tried FreeSync but the game was always way above refresh rate so no change. Tried frame rate limiter and it didn't work so tearing everywhere. So finally used chill and that kept the frame rate less than 60fps and FreeSync was within range and game play was good again. Never thought I would find Chill useful. Looks like Enhanced Sync is not doing anything at least what I can notice in Doom Vulkan.

As a side note, Doom 4K, max (Nightmare settings as well) except no motion blur and frame rates are 80fps +, most of the time 90fps, this is higher then I remembered for this game with the Vega 64.
 
That's higher than I'm getting in DOOM Vulkan 4K Ultra (Not Nightmare). I'm getting around 70fps. Unless motion blur is really that expensive.
 
I wouldn't say it's only placebo, and I want to test more, but if AMD's slides are true, it's shaving off 40ms of latency (in the best case) so maybe not much in normal circumstances. You may have to be pro-level to definitively notice a 10 - 20 ms latency difference.

:ROFLMAO: lol, motion blur in Doom is utterly a stupid settings for winning in this game. It completely blinds you to everything when turning. I should post an image showing exactly what it does when you turn fast which you will do constantly in a firefight.
