AMD Catalyst 14.4 Windows / Linux Driver Now Available

So I played Skyrim for a while with these drivers then I get hit with a black screen. It happened shortly after I exited the game, I was poking around in its program folder.

It was like my card simply turned off. I couldn't get it to recover until I powered down my computer completely and cleared my CMOS. Rebooting did nothing. Forcing resets didn't do anything either.

I've never seen my 7970 do that. It wasn't being overclocked and I was using vsync so the card wasn't stressed. Again, it happened shortly after I exited the game.

How hot exactly was the card getting?

The card max temp should be set to 95, not 90. If you set it to 90, you are most likely going to experience throttling issues on a reference cooler. If it's an aftermarket cooler based card then it may just be a weird BIOS issue from the vendor. They should be setting up appropriate fan profiles in their own BIOS. I usually customize mine with MSI Afterburner personally.

I was not monitoring the actual temps, but BF4 is the only game that actually stressed the card, I played Diablo 3 for hours without a hicup then BF4 gets the black screen, I am not 100% about changing the max temp, but activating overdrive on catalyst fixed that issue, before turning overdrive on the fans would not scale under load with both BF4 and heaven bench. Once I get home, I'll leave the default values on with overdrive still active and see what happens, but the difference on the fan was night and day.

Only annoyance with the 14.4's I encountered:

Installed the 14.4's on a 8.1u1 box with a 5870 card. I also installed Firefox 29. After rebooting, all the gray colors in the web browser and the Windows Explorer turned a pinkish color. Thought it was maybe Firefox 29 at first. Went into the CCC and the damn thing borked up the color temps. Fixed that and the colors fixed themselves. Not sure how/why the changes happened.

Replacing my motherboard from P8P67 Pro v2 to Maximus V Extreme fixed all of my stability issues, GPU-related and otherwise. Can now overclock my 3770K to 4.6ghz no problems at all, and game/flash problems have all disappeared. Beforehand, couldn't OC past 4.0 without BSODs -_- Will probably push closer to 5.0ghz but don't have time to mess with it atm.

Thank you so much for the help, all!

This is the best mobo I've ever used, and with it skipping my RAID Controller post menu when I restart, it shaves like 30secs off of reboot time. That helps tons with all the changes I make on a daily basis. Only thing that sucks is I now have to replace my ghetto case to match the rest of the system...
