AMD and Intel

Can someone tell me the major architectural differences between the two chips.

I'm not talking FSB, cache or 32/64 bit.

For example, what I want to know is why an Intel is faster for video editing/encoding and AMD is faster for gaming.

Pipes, internal design, etc...

Intel is faster on encoding and other similiar processes because of it's long pipeline (20? on Northwood, 31? on Prescott) but that long pipeline hampers it's performance on more random tasks.

Basically, when encoding, the processor is going to be doing the same thing over and over again, thus the long pipeline makes the processor more efficient.

When doing other things, like gaming, the processor is going to be doing many different things, so the pipeline has to be flushed and reloaded quite often, which makes the processor slower.

Additionally, the cache on a Pentium 4 is relatively small (the L1 cache, not L2) so it has to go to main memory more often.

AMD had a shorter pipeline, thus a flush and reload is not as much of a performance penalty. All their current processors also have a massive 128Kb L1 cache, which helps with performance.

AMD has also banked on more IPC (Instructions per cycle) while Intel had (notice past tense) banked on aggressive speeds with a lower IPC count. Therefore the AMD processor is able to do more work at a given clock speed than an Intel P4, which is why you see the "PR" ratings used with AMD processors.

Well, that is the basics without going deeper into specifics.
