I am building a slot a computer for fun and am wondering before I even start about agp 2x.
Can a 4x board run and if not then what is the strongest over all agp 2x vid card. I am thinking I should go with a matrox board or even like a kyro just to be different. a kyro2 would be fun if i can dig one up and it works with agp2x, any help is appreciated.
even more important question what if I plug a 4x board in it will it ruin the mobo?

Generally, AGP 4x cards (that can mostly handle 3.3v *or* 1.5v) will work in AGP 2x (3.3v) motherboards. If the mobo really is just AGP 1x/2x (3.3v only), then an AGP 8x (1.5v only) card will almost certainly not.

The most powerful card you can get for that is probably a Radeon 8500 or GeForce3.

Linkage and linkage.

Also, iirc arent the slots different? ie 4x and 8x are the same slot, but are different from 1x/2x? Or is it just the voltage..

The AGP 2x slot on that early Slot A motherboard is keyed. This means that most graphics cards which support AGP 8x/4x will not even fit the slot due to the different keying. A few AGP 8x/4x cards do support AGP 2x signaling - but be advised that stable operation of such cards on such older mobos is not guaranteed. (So, if a card physically fits an AGP 2x-only slot, but the card itself requires AGP 2.0 or higher compliance, then expect some instability.)

You'll be fine putting a 4x card in there. My cousin ran a Geforce 2 card in his for years and everything was fine.

edit: Now that I think about it, he even ran a Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb on that machine just fine as well.

thanks for all the replies, I found a geforece2 gts sitting in a drawer in my computer room so I will try it first.
