AMD 3200+ oc'ing advice needed

I almost bought the least expensive dual core AMD cpu before changing my mind and deciding to wait instead. I would rather save until I can afford the one I really want.

Meanwhile, I decided to oc my existing setup as far as I possibly could.

I started slowly increasing the FSB. I hit 2.4ghz, 2.5ghz, 2.6ghz and then 2.7ghz. She just keeps going! I dont know if I should stop here or keep pushing it. I'm afraid to let burn up the system since it's my main rig.My Corsair XMS is already at 270mhz per cpu-z. Is that even safe? It's only DDR400. How do I know if I'm pushing the system too far?

My 3200+ overclocked to 2.6 so consider yourself lucky (even tho these have been known to hit ur speeds). This is absolutly safe as long as ur max load temps (prime95 for 6+ hours) are under 55c. I dont know what voltage ur using to hit that overclock, but I would not go above 1.6v even with good temps with air cooling. I have ran mine at 1.6v for a bit with no problems but to take good care of ur cpu, 1.55+ is watercooling only. So again, under 1.6v and 55c and ur perfectly fine, enjoy!

P.S. as long as ur memory is stable at that speeds its fine. You will never have to worry about memory overheating without raising the voltage because it will become unstable long before that could happen.

Using DDR1 285mhz is absolutely insane! thats almost a 50% boost in clock speed

I wish my cpu was having your luck. ATM my processor is at 2.75 on stock Vcore and any higher than that and its completely unstable. I have tried everything and even if i put the Vcore to 1.57 I can only achieve 3.0 and my idle temps jump to 42C with loads near 50C using prime95. I was so pissed off because of that, I have an opteron and theyre supposed to be such great OCers...cept this one.

2.85ghz is pretty sweet for that voltage :D
air cooling i presume?

and yeah, for ddr1, 285mhz is nice. i guess i'm just jaded at this point :p

Yep. Air cooled with stock hsf.

surprisingly low temps for the stock heatsink. is it the heatpipe'd version? :D

No, Just a regular version.

Here's the cooling setup in my antec:

120mm blue LED Antec Tri-flow intake
120mm blue LED Antec Tri-flow exhaust
80mm blue LED Antec Tri-flow side door intake

Then 80mm Antec Tri-flow is mounted on side door and has a wind tunnel extended to the cpu hsf intake. Nothing but cool air from outside the case flows over the heatsink. The 120mm's do an excellent job of keeping my internal temps low. The ram have heatspeaders also if that makes any difference.

was 39c load or idle temp?
if load, i'd suspect it's reading about 5-10c low...

Ran SP2004 for 15 minutes. Max temp was 48c. Should I should upgrade the hsf?

that sounds about right. if you upgrade the heatsink, temps might go down around 5-10c.. you'll get maybe an extra 25-50mhz out of the system? it's up to you.

Not sure whats up with this...

I can pass all sorts of prime and mem tests but for some reason my system is unable to come out of sleep mode. I have to hit the reset button. Aside from that issue its fine.

common problem with newer mobos i think. just don't use sleep mode.

Darn it!!

TXU is tearing me a new one already. I try and save as much electricity as possible.

just actually turn off the comp then? :p

and learn how to get cool and quiet working with your overclock so that when your computer is on, but idle, the cpu drops it's speed and voltage way down

I got it setup. I'm currently at 1250mhz and 1.25v. The ram and bus are still running oc'ed though. Sound right?

damn now i wanna try to get mine that high. i have the same cpu but lower end mobo. i envy your ram. ;)

yup. you should be able to drop vcore a bunch more though... all of my 90nm chips (barring one.. retardo lame horrible chip) have been able to do less than 1.1v at stock speeds, much less 1250mhz :D

however, before you drop vcore any lower, what's the memory voltage at? since the memory controller is on-die and is fed the same voltage as the cpu, but see vref, which is 1/2 vdimm, there are diodes that protect that voltage from killing the cpu. it appears you let it get more than around .25-.35v difference, the memory controller will die eventually. :(
so at 1.25v, don't go over ~2.9v on the ram ;)
