Amazing drop in temps using cheap mods

I decided that my bro's Athlon XP 3000's been running too hot at 56-58C under load. So I went out got some sand paper 120(had this already actually) 800 grit, 1500grit and 2000grit sandpaper.

I then procceeded to lap the heatsink. Stock Athlon XP heatsinks have an interface plate in between the actual heatsink and cpu. I started sanding down and realized this cold plate was copper, so I got it all the way down to the copper, and got it so it was perfectly flat and reflective. I reinstalled the hsf with AC5, boot up and tested folding and got 54C load, not bad but I had a feeling I could get more.

So I used a spare 60-80mm adapter, and I'm quite proud but the adapter material is much thinner than the stock 60mm fan so I used zip ties and tied them around the screws as spacers. I ziptied an 80mm fan to the hsf. Boot up again now he was getting 47C, awesome. Now the last step was to cut out his intake and exhaust fan grills.

He has the 1st gen lanboys with 80mm fans... The case was damaged when it fell so the side panel doesn't fit right, so we decided to take it off entirely and what do you know temps drop down to 40C haha, talk about bad case airflow.

I'd say a drop from 56-58C to 40C is awesome!! He plans on making a side duct into his sidepanel(once we fix it) so his cpu can breathe fresh air. Sorry no pix, I didn't take any during the whole thing cuz well I didn't know it would improve it that much, I'll post pix of any further mods.

Doesn't no side panel = alot of noise?

For now yeah, but not that much He doesn't have any noisy fans, they are all 80mm and he's using my old 6600gt with VF700, and my machines x1900xt pretty much drones out his anyways. I'm gonna bend the sidepanel to fit again and then probably make a simple side duct for it.

Hooray for simple case modding! Although lapping isnt simple for everyone ><

Nice temp drops though.

A drop in temps by that kinda margin when taking the side panel off does indicate poor airflow. Sounds like you're on the right track... get that panel fixed up, and teach him about wire management!!! :D

Good Luck
