Anyone use this software?

How challenging is setup on the Linux server side?

Can it generate Email alerts when backups complete?

I want to utilize a Linux VMware image as the server and then connect windows clients across the internet to run some backups. This is going to be testing for concept and if it works I will place it in production.

I really appreciate it.

I recommend you looking at the main competing open source product bacula. That is if this is a business install or you have more than 10 machines. I have used bacula at home and at work since around 2000. However I do not recommed this for very small setups since it is an overkill.

Baclua many thanks will check it out! Yeah if it passes my testing initially I will be using it for business offsite over the internet backups.

If you are going to be using hard disks as your storage medium. I recommend you using the disk virtual autochanger with bacula.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/vchanger/

This will make managing devices and volumes easier especially when you do concurrent backups. I use this at home. At work my backups go to a 2 drive 24 slot LTO2 autochanger that I purcased in 2006. I have 120 tapes in use at the moment. There is also an enterprise version, however it requires a matanance contract which in my mind is very pretty expensive per seat unless you have 100s to thousands of machines.
