I currently have an Alienware Area51m laptop with an ATi Mobility 9600 128MB. The display on my Laptop is a goofy format, it's in a supposed "widescreen" format. Now here's my problem, all the resolutions on the video card are in standard format (4:3 aspect ratio), but my monitor is in widescreen format (16:9 aspect ratio). There is ONE 16:9 resolution on the monitor, but it is so high that one can barely read the text on-screen, it's that small. I have tried everything, I even unchecked the "hide resolutions that this monitor cannot display" box, and none of the resolutions listed were in 16:9 and large enough so that you don't need a magnifying glass to reas it. A friend of mine recently got the same laptop, but she got an nVidia FxGO5700 in it. Her card supports a 16:9 resolution in a non-magnifying-glass-size. Does hers support the resolution because her laptop is a newer revision, or is it just her video card? I could get an FxGO5700 off Alienware's site, but I don't know if this will solve my problem. Is it the video card that needs help or is it the monitor?
