Well, I'm looking to go A64 sometime soon, but the only way I see that happening is if I brought a mobo and CPU, which, would have AGP. Thereby allowing me to use my current graphics card. My mother would then use my old mobo and CPU, and get a couple of parts from my uncle, so then she gets a new computer too. Well, anyway, a couple of months after I've done that, I'd be buying a 6800GT/X8xx, whichever is the better deal at the time. But I figure by the time that card is completely obsolete, I'd have a job, and be able to upgrade to the latest hardware. So, in a nutshell: Will a 6800GT/X8xx suffice for about 2 years?
 
Most certainly it would suffice. Granted you may need to scale back resolutions and eye candy as game code advances, but they will still be playable.

^^^ agreed. I have a 6600GT right now and it runs all the latest titles. Granted, I play most all of my newer games at 1024x768 with no or little AA/AF, but if that needs to change or if future games get really demanding, then I can cheaply pop in a second for SLI before having to switch outright to a higher model altogether even further down the road.
 
I don't think AGP will be gone for a little while yet... However it would be prudent for anyone upgrading to go to PCI-E as it seems from now on PCI-E is going to give you more options than AGP will.
 
dont upgrade to PCI-Express until AMD upgrades to DDR2 or some other memory type.
 
yea, I'm waiting for AMD's Socket M2 to get a motherboard that supports PCI-E.

I'll pop an X2 into my current AGP based board if I need to (that does not seem likely, seeing as how close M2 is)

Except for him SLI won't be an option b/c he's going AGP. Unless you can do SLI with a mobo like the new ULI's which have both an agp and pci-e slot? For sure you can use ATI crossfire b/w AGP and PCI/E, so you should get the ATI card and a compatible motherboard if you're really set on doubling up.
 
^^I doubt any of that about the ULI.

What socket are you on currently? I would put off a minor upgrade like that of a new AGP 939 mobo until M2 if you can since you say you will be getting more money soon. Now if you have the money to go with a pci-e 939 mobo, then go for it!

If me, I have a S754 board now. Yes, I said I could pop in an X2 (sounds strange, I know) I've got that funky ASRock motherboard that has an expansion card for 939 :p

Yes I know, and I should have elaborated more. I was just using my current PCIe 6600GT setup as a contrast to his AGP 6800GT setup. If I need the power of a 6800GT, I can roughly do so by going cheap and popping in another 6600GT. That's about the only advantage of having SLI over AGP in terms of performance....

I'm a bargain hunter, so $122 for my first 6600GT + hopefully $85-100 for the second down the road for the second 6600GT = still less money than a single 6800GT (which would have put me over budget when I upgraded).
 
I'm on Socket A at the moment
The upgrade would be around christmas if it ever happened. But I was thinking last night I should probably just pop in a 6600GT. It should do fine I think. But depending on the prices come Christmas, it might be a 6800GT, but I have to get a new PSU anyway, so that has to be taken into account at the time. The main advantage I saw was the fact that my mother would for the most part have an extremely better computer. She currently has a 166mhz Pentium, or something. -twitch- And mine's a 2500, easily oc's to 3200 if needed/wanted. But, I think I should probably just get a 6600GT for the time being, and wait for M2.

-sweat- Well, I blabbered on for a bit.....

Edit: Just thought I'd add in that I just ordered a new 250gig HDD, hopefully be here in the next few days. ^.^
 
i have a agp vid card set up right now, x800xl, runs bf2 smooth on 1280x1024, 4xaa max settings, i can go 6x but im very happy at 4

Well your 2gb of RAM probably helps alot.
