Hi All,

I have an Asus A7N8X (Rev 1.04) and an ATI 9700 Pro Card. Now from what I understand the ATI has to be at .8 volts to run in 8x mode however it can be at 1.5 volts and run at 4x mode. From what I can see my mobo cannot support .8v on the AGP slot. So the best I can hope for is AGP 4x @ 1.5v . I have updated to the most current BIOS and Catalyist drivers howver the ATI Smartgear utility reports that the AGP is off and that fast write is off. I have looked at my BIOS and such and have done everything I can to get this to work but it just wont :-( I am sure I am missing something stupid! any suggestions would be greatly apprecaited!

The A7N8X is a recent board so it should have no problem running a recent card such as the 9700 Pro.

It 'runs' the card however It will not run it at 8x....I am not sure what i need to to in order for this to happen. I have enabled 8x AGP and Fast Write in the BIOS. I have used the settings in the ATI control panel for 8x but it keeps turning AGP off completely...

(since you asked for ANY suggestions)

AGP 4x is good enough... hell, 2x is good enough for most everything.

If you've used up the memory on your vid card and are relying on AGP bandwith for texturing, you're going to be close to single-digit frame rates. Otherwise, increasing AGP bandwith does very little to improve in-game speeds.

Increasing AGP 4x->8x was more a marketing move than anything else.

Im sure someone with a bleeding edge system, who has already reduced other bottlenecks can show that 4x->8x shows a slight worthwhile improvement, but an extra 1-2 fps aint worth you worrying about.

Instead of worrying about that tiny bottleneck, I'd spend my time working to get more $$ and replace that 2200+ with a mobile 2500+ and get big increases across the board.

Thank you! I agree that I do need a new Proc! This being said It appears that my card is not running at 4x at all. The smartgart tab on the settings for the card shows the agp speed set to OFF. I change it to 4x and it prompt for a restart and then i check it and it is set back to off :-( I would be more than happy with 4x....

however your 9700 is defualt 8x so there is a problem somewhere. Does that mobo support 8x if so, you should not have to manipulate voltage its automatic. I suspect a problem with our motherboard. Let me guess. its a via or a sis chipset. LOL

I hate to sound like an Intel fanboy but the Intel platform does not experience such rudimentay probelms. I hear on some of those boards you cant boot unless your agp 1x lol

damn you fanboy j/k

Actually the mobo has the nForce2 chipset on it and Award Bios. The card can only support .8v 8x agp......while the mobo only has 1.5v 8x....so i figure the best i can get is 4x...which is what im trying to get with no luck!

Maybe Nvidia does not like it when ATI goes into its boards;)
