I am building a new rig and I am at an impass.

My budget is pretty tight so im trying to decide between
2 6800GT SLI (150ish on ebay with little hope can get 2 for 375 maybe)
or just suck it up and get to
2 6600GT SLI (alot easier to get a hold of 2 of these on ebay total would be rougly 215-280)

So what I am asking is which would give me more bang for my buck, The last review I saw was for th gigabyte 3d1 which was 2 6600 into 1 card and it seemed to hold its own more or less vs 1 ultra.

A little about me I am trying to future proof this rig as best as possible PCI express, socket 939 etc. I just want solid performance for as long as humanly possible before Technology gives me another drop kick in the nuts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'd go for the two 6800GT's in SLI for future proofing

I agree. At that price, I wouldn't even wait for the next gen to show up. Two 6800GT's for 375 is kickass.

Any other suggestions? a buddy of mine is telling me to hold off until the Ultra's drop in price then get to Ultras on Ebay for 200 a pop.

If you're interested in paying as little as possible for today's top of the line, buy something cheap and entry to mid level (6200non-TC, 6600, or 6600GT) to tide you over and wait 2-6 months while the popularity and availability of the 7800 skyrockets.

nVidia prices have been on the decline for the past 2 weeks and this is only the beginning...

2 6800GT's or Ultra's in SLI will hold you over for a good 2+ years, assuming you don't play every new game that comes out at max resolution with max quality settings.

[EDIT]
I should rephrase that. If you want to wait for prices to come down even more, then get the low to mid range now to tide you over, then go for the 2 6800GTs or Ultras. If you have the cash, then go for 1 6800GT or Ultra now, get a 2nd sometime down the road.

get the two 6800 gt's .....2 6600gts equal the power of one 6800gt, which makes them pretty useless.
