Advanced Formatting and a Sector Alignment ???

I'm looking at the Samsung ecogreen F1, which is on sale today.

Samsung's drives require some special sector-alignment. Is this the same sector write-alignment that SSDs require?

What does this do? What happens if you don't have them aligned? What happens if you move the drive between machines that do and do not have this feature?

There is a utility for XP, but not for late windows server OSs or linux. So I'm trying to figure out exactly how portable this drive will be in the case of a contingency.
