ack...help! windows file system screwup?

Ok, this morning I decided to reformat my computer and reinstall Windows. I had split my HD into several partitions, C D E F G, all with separate kinds of files. I decided to delete c-f and reformat, then install windows. First problem, when installing windows it would not allow me to put all drivespace from C D E F into one drive, it split them into two.

Second, and more horrible problem that I really care about fixing...I wanted to keep the files on G, so I did not touch it during windows install. I finished running the install, booted into windows, but when opening the G partition, the subfolder with all the files contained all gibberish files. I ran scandisk to see if it helped, but that only converted the FOLDER into an unknown filetype.

The drive still has the information (I think...the 65gig partition still only has 3 free...indicating that my stuff must still be there...right?), but I have no idea how to access it or what happened. HELP?? :(

considering your description, I'll assume NTFS

Data Integrity and Recoverability with NTFS

In short you first broke the chain of Partition Tables, then didnt reimport the partition you had left, then ran a utility to "fix" it which busted it good :p
you might have even had some corruption somewhere along the line

Id recommend File Scavenger

Thanks for trying to help...it seems like you single-handedly try to solve most of the problems in here.

You had it mostly right...except that partition was fat32 (I'm not sure why I did that :p). I ended up running "GetDataBack for FAT" for most of the day, it was able to recover pretty much everything it seems. The most important thing was a folder holding edited videos that are due next week and serve as final projects for a few different classes. Seems like these are all ok though.

Thanks for the input. :)

well Im glad you got it back :D

(if you navigate up on that intergrity link, youll also see FAT info
just for future reference

NTFS is really a superior filesystem in almost all aspects ;)

As long as you limit yourself to the tiny (in FS terms) world of Windows, that is ;)

I've never had to defragment the Ext2/Ext3/XFS and ReiserFS partitions of the couple of Linux systems I reguarly use, nor suffer any data loss (NTFS seems to enjoy screwing up sections of the FAT at random intervals).

Pimpin' the FAQ again, I see ;)

OT: I hate you so much for owning my dream system  :p

you cant say that, your dream system has twice as much DDR400 and 250s or even better dualcores and a real NUMA 64bit OS:p

Well, at least my dreams are still somewhat realistic and attainable ;)

(actually, those 8xx series Opterons would look nice inside a case located right below my desk =) )
