ok so i'm gonna get a new rig at the end of the summer...
instead of bringing whole junkie system home i just brought my hdd's home and i'm using my laptop (ibm r51).
bought an enclosure, hooked up my main sys drive (160/8 maxtor).

at first i thought i might try to boot from it (y not?) but it was no go -- windows had some prob with it. ...i can choose it as the boot device but then windows tries to boot but fails and reverts to laptop hdd

so of couse it's pw protected and i can't get to the data in my profile (like my doc's, etc.).

help? ideally i would just like to boot from the external enclosure.

thanks

Google knows how to get access to your data back. After you take ownership and grant yourself full control of the root of the drive, you can copy/paste/delete/whatever at will.

The drive wouldn't boot because incompatible chipset drivers were on the Windows installation on your old desktop boot drive.

wow thanks doug,

i did try to google for an answer but i really didn't know what i was looking for ... ntfs 'take owndership' definitely worked though. thanks a lot!
