AMD Brothers,

I had just got done building my first computer and I installed MBM 5.0 and my idle temp is around 40 Celcius after playing doom3 for about 10 miunutes, it goes up to about 50 Celcius. I am not overclocking at this time.

What are the acceptable temp ranges i should expect?

- CPU: AMD FX-53 (939)
- MOBO: MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM
- RAM: 1GB CORSAIR XMS, Xtra-Low Latency 2-2-2-5 DDR400(PC3200)
- POWER: Ultra ULT31554 X-Connect 500W
- HARD-DRIVE: WD Raptor 10,000rpm (non-raid)
- VIDEO: EVGA NVidia 6800 GT - 256Mb
- SOUND: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
- CASE: Thermaltake VA3000 Dream Tower Tsunami
 
that's a little high. but you didn't give us any real data.

- what's your ambient temp. if your ambient is 35C, those are very respectable temps. just saying...

- what are you cooling with? heatsink? fan? thermal compound? if you're using a stock HSF with stock thermal paste (or god forbid - thermal tape) - you're doing very well on the temps.

i gotta agree 50 C is a lil on high side ... i
im making a few asumptions here do debunk them if im wrong

1. put arctic silver on the processor instead of toothpaste-like stuff(can almost swear it really is toothpaste somtimes...) remember... thick as a pice of paper....
2. if your case temp is high make sure :
a: top/back is exaust
b: front is intake as well as side panel
c: if all else is true getting better/more fans will improve it IF there is a verry large diff between case and room temp
3. if all these were done.. you need a better heat sink dude... the zalman 7000-alcu works on my friends overclocked fx-53
 
Got to start with the obvious. I'm no veteran here but from researching and doing the below I improved my over all temp range from 32 c case 39 c cpu at idle and 40 case, 50-52 c after gameplay to 23-28 case 35-38 cpu idle and 32 case 40 cpu after gameplay. ( i swear these are true to life. I used a laser temp gauge on it ;) ....I also keep the room temp at roughly 68-72 F so that helps too)

Round cables: routed out of the way of airflow best possible. This is where my biggest gains came from. The regular IDE cables act like air dams.

Moved my HD's and spaced them apart so the intake fans blow between them.

Originally had 2 intakes 1 infront 1 in the side panel and 2 exhausts. I've added 1 more intake fan in front and an additional in the rear for exhaust. These 2 additional fans helped me drop only 3-4 degrees overall.

I really think routing your cables out of the way helps the most with just air cooling. Outside of that you can never hope to drop temps below ambient ( current room temps ) with just air cooling. Hope this helps you any.
 
being a veteran at building computers and moding them i have come to realise that the more you know the more you make assumptions on what other people do... when i wrote my previous post i assumed he has already done cable managment

the hard drives being apart is just common sense. but it is unrelated to overall system temperature, it just keeps the individual drives cool additionaly.. lazer temping your heat sink doesnt tell you your processors temperature.. your heat sink will never be the same temp as your core
