AC'97 / Logitech Z-640 problems

With my 640's, the AC'97 would only give out the slightest garbley-guck to one of the rear speakers - the other one was fine. Clearly a problem with the integrated sound itself, so I got a fortissimo III and everything has worked dandy since.
 
Is the Audigy 2 really worth the extra money? My AC'97 does pretty good on the fronts but the rears do almost nothing, and when I set it so that they do the sound quality is really lack luster.

I'll look into the Fortissimo and Audigy 2 a little more deeply now..
