From what I've read it's just held there by dark magic and the powers of evil.

Everything I've read about that setup seems to imply that after you shove the two parts together correctly the rubber gasket/grommet just holds them together.

I'm a little more cautious and if I was going to use it and knew that I'd never be taking the two apart I'd use some kind of waterproof adhesive/aquaium sealant/JB Weld or something and make a more permanent attachment but that's probably not necessary since I've never heard of anyone having any problems with them when they were assembled correctly.

I use a Tank-O-Matic plugon, which is basically the same thing, but made by Innovatek and different looking. The pump just rotates on to the filltank. There are 2 O-Rings inside the tank, so it shouldn't leak. I've used my plugon for the past 1.5 years with no leaks, and I'm not using any kind of sealant.
