I need the absolute best 19" CRT for gaming, preferably under $300. I like the Nec 912SB

I love the NEC FP912SB, but I don't think it's easy to find anymore.

The Mitsubishi DP930 is the same monitor though.

And there's a display forum, just to let you know.

the viewsonic p90f has nice resolution and refreshies. but in general terms i think that NEC has a clearer picture than viewsonic monitors.

I thought all CRT's were pretty much equal. So.. what makes a monitor great?

No way. All CRT's are NOT equal at all. Max resolution. Dot pitch. The type of aperature grill the monitor uses. Any Trinitron monitor for example will have better colors than off brand monitors.

For example the Viewsonic series of 19's are nice but the NEC's are alot nicer. Both NEC and Mitsubishi use modified Trinitron tubes they called Diamontron or something like that.

Also refresh rates for such monitors will be different. For example the 19 inch Hitachi monitors at my work also use a Trinitron tube as does my Sony E400, however my monitor can do 1880x1440 Max resolution. While the Hitachi version only does 1600x1200.

In short there are ALOT of differences from one CRT manufacturer to the next. You really need to do your research and if possible see the monitors for yourself on display somewhere.

Also Trinitron monitors and of course Viewsonic and Samsung monitors have flatter screens compared to say some OEM Compaq monitor. Or some el-cheapo amptron or something like that.

Hmm. I'm getting an LG 19'' regular monitor, because it looks nice. It has .24 dot pitch, i think... anyway, is it any good? And no, i'm not going to use any insane resolutions, 1024x768 is fine with me. The one is use now is a 15'' Dell trinitron. Will i notice a difference?

You'll probably notice that it's way prettier than the Dell. At my school's labs, there's a lot of Dell CRTs and I've always found their image quality to be a little lacking compared to my monitors.

And also, a lot more desktop space! I think you'll be using 1154 x 862 (or whatever the heck it is) or 1280x960 or something with that monitor.

psshhhh..... not at all. go and use a $150 19" crt than use a $300 19", the difference is amazing.

yea 1024x768 is a bit of an underkill. you could do 1600x1200@100hz+ on a good monitor without any problems and 2048x1536@68hz

That is if your eyes can handle it. Mine can't.

My eyes CAN handle 1600x1200@85hz (What my P95f+ does), but it's so fricking blurry. Just remember kiddies- LCD's are going to shatter our concepts of how many pixels we fit into so much space, and they are rather static.

From the research I've done and the screens I've seen, the NEC 912/Mitsu 930 seems to be about the best it gets for 19" CRT's. Should be able to read your text at 1600x1200 too.

Yeah, the LG i'm getting can do 1600x1200@85hz, but everything would be WAY too small then...

Get glasses lol... perfect vision would not have a problem with that. Of course, it's a choice as well, my dad uses 1024x768 on the 19" I gave him. Not that he can't read it or use it effectively, he just doesn't want to.

I run 1024x768 on a 19 inch monitor and sometimes 1280x1024. My eyes just can't handle a whole lot more.

I have 20/20 vision and i don't want to become near-sighted by continiously focusing on reading those tiny letters.
