I'm in the market for a new laptop and have thought about a barebones system to get a little more bang for my buck. I have an older laptop which I just bought a 7200 rpm Hitachi drive for. I was wondering, should this HD fit just about any laptop? BTW, I'm looking at the Asus Z71, just to let ya know.
 
You should be fine, unless the design of the laptop allows heat build up in the HDD area. Hitachi 7200RPM drive only pulls an additional .1 watt at idle over a comparable 5400 drive, so it should integrate very well in a laptop that is already equipped with a 5400 drive. However, you should monitor the drive to make sure it isn't getting over 50C during operation, as temperatures higher than that will significantly reduce the reliability of the unit.
