ok i have been folding with my 4400 x2 under Win XP (console) and broke 100k ...yay!

i have a x1950 Pro in this system now and have started familiarizing myself with the GPU client. i am looking for some feedback on CPU vs. GPU performance.
will the GPU increase my production significantly over the 5.0x client?
what Catalyst Drivers?
any tips on how to switch to GPU?
any issues i should be aware of?

You have 2 choices to improve your production :

-Get 1 console client and 1 GPU client. The GPU client need one free core to feed data to the GPU and this will bring more points for you.
-Remove the 2 console clients and get a SMP client. This will take advantage of the 2 cores and will give you lots of points.

However, both choices are still beta so it need to be watched closely for any errors or issues. If you are willing to do this and is ready to take the risk, go ahead because there are more points produced this way.

Tigerbiten will have more insight about the GPU client so if he has more to add, we will learn more :)

 
With an X-2 CPU I’d have to assume you are running the SMP client, or should be ;)

If you go with the GPU client you will have to drop the SMP client because the GPU client requires a CPU core to make it run. That of course would leave you with one standard client and one GPU client and working the balance between the two cores.

Another consideration is the GPU client is power hungry and will eat more electricity then you are currently using.

Overall the point gains for most of the people I’ve seen posting haven’t been that great when running one standard client alongside the GPU client. Over all it seems you can do better running the latest VM ware and the Linux SMP client or simply run the SMP client in windows.

I hope that made a little bit of sense, if not I’ll try to clarify a bit more.

let me elaborate...

i have 2 BORGS that fold and my personal system runs a single client. more often my personal system sits idle. i installed the console on it to add to my production, but i would like to get more out of it seeing how i rarely game anymore :rolleyes:

I will wait for more feedback and post what i am attempting.

If I've read everything here, you're better off watts to points to just run a single instance of the SMP capable client on your X2 and forget about the GPU client, as the GPU doesn't offer much if any gain over the SMP client and a dual core, and the GPU uses far more power under load than your CPU.



What I'm waiting for is for someone to write something in CUDA or similar to take advantage of the G80. If the X1950 does well with 46 shaders imagine what a G80 could do with 96-128.
 
The single CPU client + GPU client is going to pull in around 800-1000 PpD depending on overclock & protiens.
The SMP client is again going to pull in 800-1000 PpD depending on overclock & protiens.
But the CPU + GPU setup will use around an extra 100 watts/hours for the same output.

I would just use the SMP client.

Would there be any advantages of Folding on a X1900GT and E6600 with standard + GPU client over the SMP client? The electricity cost doesnt really matter since its not paid by me lol (dorm ftw).

You've got your 6600 overclocked, its going to blow the CPU+GPU combo out of the water in terms of output if you run the SMP client instead. My 6600 is basically all my production right now, so I'm getting roughly 1600-1700 out of it, depending on how much I'm gaming. Maybe if you had a 1950XT it would be closer, but I'd definitely go with the SMP.

 
Honestly, try them both and see what happens to your production. I have an Athlon 4800+ @ 2.6GHzrunning the SMP client and I've also had the same CPU running the GPU client with an X1900XTX and a single console.

Very little points difference, you get a lot more points per WU with the SMP setup, many more returns with the GPU. For science, I say GPU. For points, either. For electricty, definitely the CPU.

I do a bit of both, though I'm not running the GPU client right now. I have an X1900XTX and an X1900XT that I'm getting ready to put into use with an Opteron 170 and 165, respectively. This will be on top of my SMP boxes and the few odd standard console borgs.
 
The biggest benefit I see from running the SMP vs the GPU (other than points and power) is simply that you have to stop the GPU client to do any graphic intensive task (and have to do this manually and then manually restart it). With the SMP it releases on the fly as CPU is needed and you dont have to worry with stopping/starting it all the time.

That being said When/How/Where/What you fold is unimportant as long as you are folding :)
