Would somebody let me know how is it possible for me to overclock my cpu to speeds of 2.0 and higher? I have read a bunch of OC'ing articles but I still seem to be a little lost. I know how to change the external clock speed, multiplier and everything but" I can't figure out how to lower my ram's fsb". If I oc my system up to 2.3 then my ram would have a fsb of 230; I don't know if its safe or stable (since its supposed to run at 200). I read about using dividers and setting memory speeds to 100 mhz, 133 mhz etc I can't seem to find them in the bios. Can someone direct me on how to do this.

Specs:
ABIT AV8-3rd Eye.
Amd 3000 939 Winchester
Kingston Hyper X dual chan DDR 400 timings 2-2-2-5-1 1gb.
 
If you go into advanced chipset settings (or whatever its called, i forgot) theres a DRAM timings page, in there set your ram to a different speed. DDR400 will run 1:1 with the HTT bus, setting it to DDR333 will lower your ram clock down. You'd need about 240MHz or so on the HTT bus to hit 200MHz ram speed on the DDR333 divider (i think anyway).
 
I've got an AV8. What you might be looking for is called a multiplier. With your ram set at "Auto" or "SPD" in the memory settings, it defaults to DDR400. This is 1:1 ratio. You can drop the ratio down to something like 5:6 (DDR333) and then up the FSB and multiplier. That's about as simple as it gets. And yes, 2Ghz is VERY possible. I've got 2.5Ghz running right now, and can do 2.7Ghz with only minor problems under load. (CPU overheats)

Try this:

This'll probably be a simpler way of getting your desired 2Ghz without playing with RAM timings. I'd still recommend learning about them, though.
 
Thanks a bunch, I get the idea now. I set it at the timings you gave me but the memory's fsb displayed on cpu-z was like 196, so I just went ahead and set the cpu fsb to 250. Now my memory reads like 204; I'm guessing a little of overclock cant hurt it. Do you think my ram should be able to match up with my cpu's fsb at speeds of 230-250? AV8 has some weird temperature readings, hopefully everything is running cool.

Depends on the RAM. The 204Mhz shouldn't be a problem, as my 939 3000+ ran by default at 204x9.0.

I'm not QUITE sure what you're asking here, but the RAM speeds will not be the same as the FSB speed. That's what setting it to DDR333 instead of DDR400 does, and it's normal. Once more, it really depends on the RAM. If you're trying to get the memory over 200Mhz, you really should start playing with timings. Personal experience with a simular rig has told me that 2-3-2-5 @ 5:6 is better than 2-2-2-5 @ 2:3.

And as for the AV8 temp readings... I recall reading somewhere that Abit mobos read 7-10 degrees hotter than the actual temp. Asus reads 7-10 degrees COOLER than the actual device temperature. Basicly, try and keep the CPU under 60 degrees at full load. If you can do that and maintain stability, you're safe.

Lol it certainly does. My AV8 reads anywhere between 55-60C at full load with an XP120 and a 130CFM YS tech fan. I just dont even look at it anymore :p. I know my HSF is mounted fine, and im only at 2.4GHZ w/ 1.5v so it cany be running too hot :p
 
Just one more little thing, I think I am supposed to set the ldt frequency at 4x right? it fixes some stability problems. Thanks once again for th3 quick replies.

Yeah, you need to keep the HTT under 1000MHz in most cases. Dropping the HTT multiplier doesnt lose any performance really, and 4x should be good for 250MHz bus.

Just to note, 3x is known to have problems on AV8s, so if you ever need to go under 4x, you'll probabaly have to go down to 2x.
 
I'm running at 204mhz bus, make any difference if I use 4x? I used 5x once and it froze on me a couple of times.
 
204MHz memory speed? Or 204MHz HTT speed? 204MHz HTT shouldnt really cause an issue at 5x, but i guess anything over 1000 can. 4x has zero drop in performance, so theres no harm done by lowering it to 4x anyway.
