Ability to lock threads?

Just noticed the ablilty to lock your own threads, at first i thought it was genmay only but it seems to be universal. Is this to combat pointless posts after the quesion has bein solved or what?
 
A word of warning goes with the ability though. Even when you can lock and unlock your own posts, it's not something to be played with. Once you lock your own thread, don't go back and reopen it. If an Admin or Mod locks your thread, never reopen it.....it tends to upset us tremendously ;)

I assume unlocking a thread of mine I locked myself incase something goes terribly horribly wrong that i thought went wonderfully fantastically right is OK? I've always been in the grey on that but too lazy to ask... :D
