Well I had plans to buy an athlon XP-M 2600+ but it all fell through as I couldn't get my hands on SP-97 and now I can't get an SI-97. So now I have decided that I will get an A64 (3000 or 3200 not decided yet on that). Well anyway what I really want to know is if the stock cooler on there is any good? I wish to overclock but that not is a primary objective, I just want it to be reasonably quiet. I will use AS5 of the stock stuff so that should make some difference shouldn't it?

Stock cooling??...pfft!
Sure, you could OC it...but if you're anything like me, it's NEVER enough!!! :D
And as for stock coolers being "any good"...well, "STOCK"...self explanitory. ;)

Unlike the cooling solutions that came with the AthlonXPs, the stock solution for the Athlon64 is pretty good. It's got a good amount of surface area, the 70mm fan moves a good amount of air, the copper base will help transfer heat between the core and the heatsink fins, and even the thermal pad is from Shin Etsu.

It will work in a stock application, and it will work well. But you can always find a better product if you're willing to spend some money.

I put together an A64 system for a mate. With the stock cooler, stock paste and one 120mm exhaust.....30-33Idle and after Priming for about 1/2 hour it only got to 41

the stock cooling for the a64 is the best stock cooling solution ive personally seen

a64's run cooler then athlon-xps... probably even the mobiles but thats a grey area.. i havent looked into comparing them

Since overclocking isn't really my main objective I think I'll go for the stock cooler and save some pennies instead of shelling out for a £30 heatsink.

Thanks for all your help
