Ok, so I loaded up clockgen for my motherboard (MSI K8N neo plat), and found the following things to be true using it. All of these numbers were verified to some extent with prime95 running for an hour or so (yes I realize this isn't sufficient but you'll see my problem in a a bit)
MSI K8N Neo Platinum (socket 754)
CPU is a 3000+ (2ghz newcastle CG stepping)
Memory is 1gb of Corsair XL (pc3200, 2-2-2)
HTT with an x4 mult maxes out at 256mhz
HTT with an x3 mult maxes out at 307mhz
maxes out at 2533 and the following numbers
253 x10
266 x 9.5
281 x 9
298 x 8.5
Memory with 1T timing, 2-2-2 maxes out at 210
with 2-3-2 timing maxes out at 229. 229 is the max that the board will do 1T at
Memory with 2T timing
2.5-3-3 maxes out at 270 or so
2-3-3 maxes out at 245
2-3-2 maxes out at 230
So I found that the best way to max out as much as possible was 266fsb, 9.5 mult, x3 HTT, 2-3-2 1T ram timings with a divider, and I pcmark 6800. Sounds great, it's like +400 or so from 200fsb. So I set the settings in bios, reboot, and boom, bios goes into safe mode and resets my clock. Now I KNOW it's stable with reasonable certaintly (it should at least be posting/booting windows). Yet it won't even post, let alone boot. Some times it was working however (I ended up playing around with stuff).
And when I DID the get 266fsb setup to post, I prime95'd it for 18 hours, no problems. I"m using the 1.4 bios.
What are my options here? I tried some other overclock numbers, and most of them weren't posting with any regularity (some were hit and miss, some were total misses). I guess I could use clockgen to generate the HTT on boot, but that's kind of janky
