Ok so I didn't know exactly where to post this so mods if you know a good place please move it, thanks!

Problem: I'm a part of the commitee for my AFJROTC unit's Air force Ball and we are planning a video presentation. As you can see from the diagram below we have 2 rooms that are only partially connected so we thought a closed curcuit TV would work using a Sony camcorder (to watch the speaker). But we will be using VHS to project a video on a Screen, we need to come up with a realistic, low cost, effective solution to aloow this to work as autonomously as possible.

My ideas: out some sort of vga splitter/ switch to change feeds when to speaker stops and the video plays, we would not relay the sound due to echoing , just video. Diagram below.

My Questions

1. Can I play back in real time video from a regular video camera onto the tv?

2. Will lag be apparent?

3. How much will the splitter/switch be?

4. Any other ways of doing this?

Thanks Guys, My commander is counting on me to do this.

Your solution sounds like the best one. If the whole thing is analog, there should be no lag at all, both from the VHS and from the camcoder. In our cable tv studio we would just get two cameras, one fixed on the speaker and one fixed on the projection screen, and use the control board to switch between the two cameras. But your solution sounds more practical. I guess the only thing to pay attention to is to use high grade analog cables to ensure signal integrity.

So I need:

1 Video Splitter (compositie yellow thingy)
1 Video Switch (composite yellow thingy)
5 cables (composite yellow thingy)
- 1 75-100ft cable
- 3 15ft cable
- 1 50ft cable

[EDIT]: BTW what's a good place to get this stuff locally? What should I be paying for this stuff?

This is how I would wire up the setup.

I'd use the following:
Two powered 2-4input A/V switchers (don't want to use a passive switcher since we are going to use a Y-cables on the output of the VCR since most consumer based vcrs only have one set of A/V outputs, pro and industrial decks usually have 2 or more.)
Wireless Mic and Receiver (or an audio cable from the mixing board for audio feed into the remote TV)

Connect the Y-cables to the outputs of the VCR and connect then to input 1 of each switcher.
connect the Camera's video output to input 2 of switcher #2.
Connect audio from the Wireless receiver to input 2 on switcher #2 (this is going to go with the cameras video feed.

Connect Switcher #1's video output to the TV or projector in main room and audio to the mixing board.

Connect Switcher #2's audio and video outputs to the TV in the remote room.

Place switchers where it is easily switched and mark them so that you know which one is for each room.

To operate, while speaker is talking, put Switcher #1 on any input other than 1 or turn off TV or projector, and on Switcher #2, set that to input #2.
When playing the VCR, place both switchers to input #1 and make sure that the TV or projector in the main room is on.

If the audio is on a seperate system, just a mic and speakers will this be a problem? we will just switch it to the project and the mic? We don't have a soundboard or any super equipment. I'll draw a diagram of the idea that you gave me, I think it's how I'm going to do it. I go to go to bed tonight but tommorow I'll drawit and post it and you can tell me if i'm good to go. Thanks!

depending on the camera, you may be able to use the onboard mic to give sound to the remote room.
Not sure how large the remote room is and how far the speaker at the podium is.
the sound from the main room may carry over to the remote room fine, but it's always good to have clear loud enough audio sent over there.
I'll elaborate some more on teh audio setup tomorrow, really tired right now and am about to pass out on the keyboard.
