n00b question...

most guides etc speak to oc with a cpu that has a locked multiplier. mine doesnt have that, so...

I recently got a qx6700. my ram is the gskill 4x2gb pc6400 ( running Vista 64 )

Not sure if the ram will oc much, so I was hoping to get a little oc out of the cpu without changing the ram. As the multiplier on the qx is unlocked, I can just bump it from 266x10 to x11 or x12, and not affect fsb, correct? That would allow a oc on the cpu without affecting the ram or the fsb?

also, if I do that, think I would need to adjust cpu voltage at all? Its on auto atm, 1.25v

Would it re set to a small bump on its own, or should I need to inch it up a tad?

You need to read up on OCing before you go raising voltage and everything. The simple answer is yes but the complicated answer is that you need to know what you are doing before you do it.

well..I just wanted a small bump. So I did it. changed the multiplier to 12, am as we speak at 3.2ghz

As I said, not sure what I can get away with the ram I have, gskill 4x2gb 55515 pc6400

so I left the fsb along, etc, it remains at 1067

I noticed after re booting, the the bios changed itself to 1.29 cpu voltage, from the 1.25 it was at. the auto function seemed to work.

guess thats the selling point of the extreme versions..simple cpu oc, if ya want

I also lapped my cpu and Zalman 9700 this after noon. Not sure if takes the as5 a few days.. site says 300 hours .. to really cure.. but lapping doesnt seem to have a hill of difference..maybe its time to replace the zalman. Im at 52,52,47,47 of the 4 cores, just posting on the site, so a load would be outta the question.

The selling point is that you can get extreme OCs because of the unlocked multiplier.
