On my way home today (Highway 144 between Sudbury and Timmins, Ontario), I spotted this monument errected at the roadside. These are (sadly) rather common, showing the place where someone died misjudging a corner, etc. This gentleman was a miner I assume, by the hardhat.

I took a dozen shots of this monument but am not happy with any of them (this one was best, IMO). I will be back that way again and would like to perfect this image. Suggestions?

No responses yet? For what it's worth, I'd like to see it in these ways:

1) Black and white, framed against the sky instead of the trees, basically just showing a silhouette. It would still be fairly clear what some of the components of the monument are, but would leave a bit more to the imagination and thus probably give a bit more cause for reflection. From what I can see of the surroundings, it doesn't necessarily look like it would be easy to frame that monument against the sky :(.

2) Same basic shot but without the detail in the background and the clutter in the foreground. Would just decreasing the DOF help?

3) I could also imagine a night shot, flashed, looking up at it from very near ground level. I think it would be tough to light the cross properly without also having too much light on the plants in the immediate vicinity.

Anyway, what you have there is still a nice shot. Let us know if you do get some variations on it.

That was shot wide open. I was hoping to isolate the monument from the trees but I guess they are still to close. I may try with a longer lens. Definetely I will flatten or cut down the foliage in front. I was down on my knees shooting upwards but didn't get the effect I was hoping for. The shot was taken mid-day. If I plan it right, I may be able to get some better lighting next time. Thing is, it is about 2 1/2 hours from home so its not just something I can go back and try easily

take a different angle. maybe put that on one side of the photo and get some of the street in there.
