ok maybe SOMEONE could explain this

everest is telling my processor is a p4 2.4'a'

.. yet it gives all the characteristics of a p4 'b'

???!

im not complaining, but whats with this, the p4'a' has a 400mhz fsb as standard and a 256kb cache, but mine has a 533mhz fsb as standard and a 512kb cache

what gives?

Not actually. A 2.4A has no Hyperthreading. The "A" series Prescott's are misleading that way. It's actually closer to a Celeron D which has a 533MHz FSB and no HT. So really they are more like a larger cache Celeron and less like a Pentium 4.

So really the only saving grace a Prescott "A" has over a Celeron D is 1024k L2 vs. 256k L2.

Actually the whole A B C and E thing doesn't work like most people think it does.

The "A" generally means that the "A" version replaces another version of the Pentium 4 at the same clock speed.

There was no 2.4A before. Just a 2.4GHz Northwood. So the Prescott version is the third version to be clocked at 2.4GHz. The "C" version was a 800MHz FSB part and supported Hyperthreading. There was also a 2.4B which was actually a 533MHz Northwood.

Confused? You should be.

See the 3.06 is actually not an "A" "B" or "C". Rather it's just a Pentium 4 3.06GHz processor.

The "A" prior to the Prescott core release were processors that had the Northwood core that replaced Willamette core P4's at the same clock speed. So there is a 1.6A 1.8A and 2.0A. Also a 2.2A if I am not mistaken. But the 2.4 Northwood is just a 2.4. Then came the C and now the A.

You see all "C's" are Northwoods with Hyperthreading and a 800MHz FSB. All "E's" are Prescott's with Hyperthreading and an 800MHz FSB. But not all "A's" are Northwoods.

The misconception is that all Northwoods with a 400MHz bus are "A's" and all Northwoods with a 533MHz FSB are "B's" and all "C's" are Northwoods with Hyperthreading and an 800MHz FSB and all "E's" are Prescotts.

Really with the exception of the Prescott A series, all A's are Northwoods that replaced Willamettes at the same clock frequencies and all "B's are 533MHz Northwoods that replaced Northwoods with a 400MHz FSB at the same frequency.

To add to the confusion there is also the "F" series Prescotts with EM64T. Although they do not have the EDB bit like the "J" series processors do. Nor should those be confused with the 600 series that has EM64T, TM2 and Speedstep 2.

If there is no letter designation then it is the first processor to be sold at that clock speed.

There is an ongoing debate on whether or not the Extreme Edition CPU's are Northwood's or Gallatins. They have the same features as a Northwood such as 800MHz FSB, and HT, but the Northwood core doesn't have L3 cache. The Gallatin does. The Gallatin which is a Xeon core has L3 cache, but Gallatins don't run on an 800MHz FSB and also have SMP support. Which the EE's don't have.

So in reality the EE's are their own core as they are neither completley Gallatin or Northwood.

Hope this helps. If anyone has any corrections or additional processors I missed in the P4 Netburst family let me know. I'll add to the list.

Not without considerable research on my part. While I know some things about A64's I don't know them nearly as well as Intel processors.

I've primarily been a Intel guy for years due to several reasons. Not the least of which is just the fact that I haven't had the best luck with AMD CPU's in the past.

But if someone doesn't hurry up and make me a freaking SLi board for the P4 I'll switch to AMD soon enough.
