Hi,

I'm building a little internet server that must on 24/7 because it will also collect data from my weather station. The silence must be almost absolute. So I'm planning to use a supermicro X7SPA-HF-D525 board, lian-li Q08 case and a seasonic 400 watt fanless. The only fan I will put a noiseblocker PWM at the top of the case.

What do you think?

Regards

Ugo

If you can live with an external power brick, use a pico-PSU 120 or 150 instead of the seasonic. With that MB and a couple of disks 400W is complete overkill and will not run efficiently. The Pico's are perfect. And as a bonus they are dead silent.

The external power bricks for the 120W and 150W versions of the picoPSU have tiny 40mm fans inside them...very annoying. The picoPSU itself has no fan of course.
400W PSU is indeed overkill...at 40-50W output the efficiency I think will only be 40-60%.
I have a Supermicro pizza box D525 server that has a 200W built in PSU. With one laptop hard drive, one PCI-e gigabit NIC, and the D525 board, the power consumption at most is 50W.
Perhaps get one of the smaller picoPSUs that don't have fans in their power bricks.

it appears the supposed HP N36L Micro Server has dual core 1.3GHz processor/board,150watt PSU, nice and neat casing, x86, 1GB ECC RAM, 160GB SATA disk for overall entry-level cost build. Add more ram if you need. add more disks for RAID-1.

In case of disk failure in RAID-1, identify which disk, shutdown, open front panel, easy-swap-bays. pull bad disk, push in new disk. startup and let the disk rebuild. Overall a system that can run on its own with minimal attention.

Edit : March 12,2011 - it appears I gather from HP site there are two spec PSU either 200watt and 150watt. Need to double-check. Quickspec shows 150watt. support Website has 200watt

hi,

the big problem with pico psu is that I don't know how close the hole of the psu slot

Just a dumb question - would a laptop with a decent sized hard drive suffice? Could be an quiet and compact solution.
