1 - when is the best weather to paint?... i live in canada and its winter right now... about -22 C and windchill -10 C... i mean most of the articles ive read were painted during the summer... should i wait till the summer to do it?

2 - cutting out a blow hole... should i use a dremel or hole saws?

btw the case im working on is the Antec P160
 
1 - Wait till spring if you can't paint inside. Needs to be at least above 60 deg F...check the paint can, it should tell you what temp is needed for best results.
2 - Definitely a hole saw

you could do it in your bathroom... if you built a spray booth out of a cardboard box, and had the fan running. I've done that when it's too cold outside to spray. Just have to be careful not to spray around like a madman.
 
Wonder if I could throw together a paint booth out of tarps and PVC in my garage...anybody ever try that? It's still too cold here in Texas for painting too :( and I wanted to re do the paint work on my case. Just don't want to wait a couple more months for things to warm back up. Plus since I'm on midnights the garage would be the only way to do anything right now anyhow...

Small space heater may be your best bet. Something is outside the "booth" but can warm the area you are in. I live in Carson City, NV and it has been pretty nice out lately. I went out on saturday at about 2pm and it was around 60deg so I tried painting. One thing I can recommend is if the can is a bit too cold, throw it in a bucket with hot water and submerge it for awhile. This will warm the paint up long enough for you to do about 2 coats atleast. Also I would warm the piece you are painting if possible. I was just testing to see what the paint looked like, Model Paint Black Pearl, so I tossed a harddrive cage bracket in the oven on warm for about 5 mins and heated up the paint in a bucket of hot water while I did this then went outside and painted. Probably not the smartest thing to do with primer on but hey it worked.

fan hole... im planning to put in my case... since i cant paint yet.. i mite as well do the fan holes...
 
Actually now that I am comparing the stuff they look to be the exact same. You can basically use it for either fan holes or windows. I originally thought the stuff you linked from MNPCTECH was the big think stuff you see that comes with window kits. But yeah you can use them for either.

um, not the best... but manageable. I was mostly just after a covering coat anyway... and it worked well enough for that. There wasn't any noticable overspray in the bathroom.
 
new question:

what is the best way to cut plexiglass/acrylic/lexan... ive heard that using the dremel isnt the best way since it melts it or something... what would u guys recommend?...
 
You can do it with a rotary tool, you'll just need to set it to a low speed to avoid melting. The lowest setting on most variable-speed tools should do it.
 
IMO The hole saw is the way to go on case/side panel holes. I just finished cutting 6 4.5" holes in my V2000 for 120mm fans. I highly recommend using a holesaw this size in a drill press where you can as the 1/4" pilot bit will cause the pilot hole to become egg shaped (from the holesaw itself applying side thrust to the pilot bit, I finally replaced the pilot bit with a 1/4" drill blank to prevent this when free hand drilling the case holes)and allow the holesaw itself to move around creating a hole that will require some cleanup. Also run the holesaw as slow as you can to prevent it trying to walk around on the surface.
 
new question:

how do u de-static something thats full of static??... i got my lexan today and when i pulled off the protective film it started to attract dust and etc... how do i prevent this??... i mean i thought of using a cloth to wipe it off but feared it owuld make it more staticky(sp)

Overspray! eek! .........whether using a can or using a paint gun, overspray is your worst enemy.......that's why you never spray near a car if outside.

You can use a dremel with one of those spiral bits but it takes a while and wont be straight at all.

I have been painting in my case in the bathroom.. The tub makes a good place to wet sand too.
Just open some windows, turn the fan on, wear a 3M face mask, and paint and get out of there... I forgot to do all of that stuff one time and I felt brain dead for the rest of the day

It's just good advice not to be spray painting in your house. If you don't own said house, I understand why you do......Most homeowners wouldn't.
 
Yep, I am planing on painting late spring/ early summer on my new case. going to make a room on the front porch with plastic sheeting.(pollen is very bad here in SC).

A) Leave the protective film on until you have completed ALL the machining.
B) Just rinse the part in water and dry off with a soft cloth and static is much reduced.
 
new question

guys this time its about clear coating... so i read a few painting tips and it was suggested to stick to the same brand all the way thru... im using Krylon Fusion for my case so should i be using Krylon Fusion clear coat?... the closest thing i found was Krylon Low Odour Clear Gloss.. will taht work as a clear coat or should i get something else?

again any suggestions would be appreciated... thanks
