I first used gparted to make a second partition next to my original XP partition. I installed windows 2008 server only to decide I didn't need it and removed that partition and resized the first back to take up the entire drive.
The problem is, if I run fixmbr and fixboot under the XP repair console to get rid of the boot manager from Vista/2008, i get "a disk read error occurred". HOWEVER, if I do bootrec /fixmbr and /fixboot using repair console on the 2008 disk, I get both entries for XP and 2008, but the one for XP DOES WORK (obviously the 2008 one does not since the partition is gone).
I want to revert back to the original boot loader since I only have one OS. What is going on here? fixboot and fixmbr on XP recovery console doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas? Thanks.
