Recently, we had 2 members on our team banned due to discussion on ad-blocking programs, tecniques, etc...

For the record, any such discussion on this board will lead to your getting banned. Make no mistake about it. Kyle has mandated that this is the case. If you know what is good for you, you will refrain from this type of discussion.

Thank you,

Moose :)

(23) Any discussion of AD BLOCKING software or instruction for using ad blocking regarding this forum or any other discussion in general of attempting to block advertisement will result in a no questions asked permanent ban on your account. This is not done lightly, rather deliberately to deny access to those who choose to utilize this forum, but not support our sponsors. It takes money to finance the cost of bandwidth, especially a forum of this size and if you don't care enough to support us through our advertisers, then we don't need your business. This will be the only warning with no discussion.

(from the [H]ard|FORUM Rules just fyi)

Out of curiosity, does Kyle keep adding to the rules?

While I agree 100% with the logic of the rule, when I joined I don't recall there being 1/2 that many line items. I support many of the sponsors listed on the [H]. This is no different than paying the premium for Tivo or Moxi due to lost advertisement revenue.

I think Kyle should make us re-agree to them when they are updated rather than bouncing accounts of people that may be ignorant of the rule.... maybe a license agreement screen prior to login when they have been changed. This is just a random thought, not soap-boxing at all.

I agree though, ignorance is not innocence...

I think the theory is that it's up to the individual to assume responsibility and to check the [H]ard|Forum Rules thread every once and a while to stay on top of things.
I know there are new rules since i've joined as well, so i'd assume that yes, Kyle does add to them on occasion.

Can't blame him for having that in there, if not we'd get an email everytime there was an update and people would report it as spam or something stupid like that.

Or we could just all receive PMs from him, alerting us to the change.

Only problems I can see is that some people have PMs shut off, but maybe he could bypass that.

In answer to your questions...

Isn’t this sort of a no brainier? You can’t even get Internet service without agreeing to the rule or Terms of Service.

If you choose not to read them, well, then that’s on you is it not?

I have noticed both here and other places where there exist people who just know the rules don’t apply to them, and in the end they end up making life miserable for everyone else and paying the price of being banned or kicked out or whatever.

Life is full of rules, they apply to everyone. At some point we all answer to someone ;)

i have @#@#$% running and pwn all adds...exept the ones on hard forum. i like computers and thus dont feel the need to block all the computer related adds. would it not have been for the adds i wouild not have known about lan fest 2k5. now if tides change and we start advertising with like adult friend finder or somthing stupid like then w/e

p.s. kyle please dont ban me...i like the newegg adds

I'm along the lines of a lot of people in thinking. Some ads are a nuisance. Personally, though, I like the [H]ardForum and [H]ardOCP ads. Kyle's got a good deal with the advertising guys, as all the ads are on-subject. I haven't seen porno ads, even though those make a fairly high revenue, I've even gotten some damn good deals from their "partnerships" with NewEgg. Plus, every time I go and shop at NewEgg, I wait for a click-through ad from the [H]. I found out about NewEgg from here, and [H]ardOCP has some of the best guides, the least intrusive advertising, and the best admin of many sites I've swung by. plus, the atmosphere in the forums generally rocks.

In short: Don't be an ass, don't block Kyle's really focused and unobtrusive ads that provide you a service, and support the [H] by buying NewEgg after following the links. =] They notice, believe me.

Well, I just wish that some of the ads chosen don't eat up 100% of my CPU resources, and that Kyle had a better answer than "sucks to your browser" when people mentioned the egg's ad as a problem. I kept the ads going, grudgingly because I like the forums and respect [H]'s need for revenue to maintain these sweetass forums. If the ads didn't suck up all the CPU's cycles and were completely in the background, I think that fewer people would have issues with them.

I've checked these forums on systems ranging from a Pentium MMX, a P2-233, a SunSPARC server(500MHz or something), to an Athlon 64 and P4. I've used Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, Mozilla, Konqueror, Safari, Camino, and a few text-based browsers, and never once have I had a problem with an ad using all my cycles. I remember when people made a stink about it, but personally, I feel that part of it was bad management on the part of the user for their computer, or a poorly-updated plugin (all the egg's ads are Flash apps, from what I've seen.

Yeah, i hear you. I know i wouldn't complain if the ads changed to just static JPEGs, but as it is i'm a fan of the Egg, and i suppose i can deal with the current ads we have :D.
...just wanted to toss that in to the fray.

You have a Cyrix 66mhz proc don't you...
Yup, that's your problem. :p

actually, i think that if you don't have flash installed, it puts up a gif. not positive, but i think that is the case. so you could probably get something (greasemonkey? i dunno) to tell it you don't have flash... just a thought.

personally, i don't care about ads on pages i visit. they keep it free

mwhahaha

Is the new firefox going to fix that issue? If so, that is wonderful! If not, then it makes me consider using IE for the forums.

But yes, Adds are awesome, and if they keep our stuff free, then you really can't complain. And, it's not Newegg's or [H]ardocp's fault that the ads cause problems, it's firefox.

Using IE just for one site wouldn't hurt anything, as the [H]ard sites don't have spyware on them, and if FF is your default, any outside link from HardOCP or the forums will open up in Firefox, keeping you safe.

Go Newegg! (If we didn't have them, where would we get our fast folders?)

I run the latest version of firefox and have never had a problem with CPU usage

Something else for the nay-sayers. Kyle and the [H] crew do a good job of adding a sticky about rule changes in the forums thay generally apply to. (such as this one) Every time I hit up a forum and see a new sticky or one marked as having unread posts, I check it out before whoring up the forum.

It's funny... I'd never even bother with an ad blocker.
I like the site I click the ad.

I have a popup blocker but I opened it to this and every other site I trust.... though I have yet to see any of the good sites (like this one) with a popup....

Guess this is one less thing I have to worry about getting myself banned over. ;)

Yes, it puts up a gif. I don't have flash installed here on my work machine, and all the ads are gif based.

i'll have to look into getting a greasemonkey thing, then. (for those with CPU load issues)

personally, mem usage is more of an issue (peak says ~230mb, and i'm only doing normal browsing... at least i have 1gb now)
mwhahaha

In the nick of time....almost edited it in with the offending language removed. Thanks Moose.

Meaniman popped up in another forum as well and, big surprise immediately bashed the [H] for all of it’s and our shortcomings.

No big loss, glad someone else has to deal with them. :D

Well, I read the posts over at OCAU. Due to some problem with registering I am not able to post but am able to read (go figure). It's sad that things happened the way they did. I wish Leadman didn't take it so poorly. Thanks moose for trying to make things better.
