I dug back through 10 pages and did not see anything that looked like it may compare.

What is the big difference between these two cards - other than $200? I know the XT has faster ram but is it $200 worth?

Real reason I am asking though is 'cause my supplier cannot get an XT within a reasonable time but can get a Pro

XT is an overpriced, overclocked, 9800pro 256mb

IMO the sapphire deal is the best deal in the world... right now

if i remember correctly benchmarks were posted a while back and there was nearly no difference. maybe 5-8 fps... nothing subsantial...

The XT is definitely not worth the extra $200. Go with the 9800 pro.

If you got lucky and got a good card, you could overclock a 9800Pro with a water block on it 10-15% higher than the XT's stock clocks. If you got the bucks and want braggin' rights, buy a XT. If your looking for major performance without spending top dollar, 9800Pro all the way. They are still very very good cards. :D

you could buy a 9800pro and buy nice watercooling system with the $$ you saved from not getting an XT.

I'm an aircooling freak. My machine passes over 700 cfm through the case. The card I was looking at was ASUS since it seemed to already be heat-sinked sufficiently without voiding any warranties this time. However, I'm not above getting a different brand and putting on the big actively cooled Zalman, I guess. Thought I would "cheat" on the cooling this time (i.e. no mods)

Dude I just made the switch from a 9700 Pro to a 9800 Pro.. my 9700 Pro at the speeds in specs did the same as my new 9800 Pro.. the only reason I sold my 9700 Pro was because I could get a good price on it in my country and after like febuary it wouldnt be sold for more than 200 US dollars.. I got 250 US dollars for it and bought it for 220 US in march 2003.. I shelled out 50 more bucks and now have a 9800 Pro.. reason I am telling you this is that

I plan on overclocking the mofo to 9800XT speeds and for 200+ bucks the XT is not worth it IMO.. Btw if you are talking about a 9800 Pro 128 MB versus 9800XT 256 MB then 9800XT will show substantial gains when running at resolution 1600*1200 w/ AA and AF to around 4x+/8x+ because of the ram.. not due to clock speeds as much..

The new sapphire 9800pro 256s (with the shiny metal HSF shroud) are just XTs downclocked with a modified pro bios. It's the R360 core and has the same board layout as the XT. A number of people have flashed theirs to XTs with great success.

I haven't done mine because i haven't rebooted in a while and I don't feel like doing it now. :)

I would get the 256... if you want to hang onto it for longer before you will want to upgrade.

At least thats what my plan of attack might be, accept in the 1nd half of the year, when my b-day rolls around with the 9800XT

I upgraded from a Pro to an XT. I am very happy with it. I can run everything maxed out now (AA & AF) and it is much smoother. The 256mb is going to come in nice when newer games are released. I run at 515/400 now. This card rocks. :)

Appearently, I should have the Pro in hand tomorrow (ASUS variety). The tech I spoke with didn't sound too happy: "This card is worth more than I clear in a week" were his words :D

my 9800xt clocks to 510/400 on water no vmods
i havnt seen many 9800pros at that speed without vmods

You guys who are saying the XT is just an over-clocked Pro need to get your facts straight. Yes, the XT has a higher clock/memory frequency, but that's certainly not the only difference. The Pro uses DDRII where the XT uses DDRI. The XT core is different... ATI did some optimizing to make it run cooler. Then there's the over-drive feature that basically over-clocks for you. You get Half Life 2 with the purchase of an XT.

Hugely different? No, but different nonetheless. Worth an extra $200? Not with my money, but I don't speak for everyone.

Money notwithstanding would you rather have an over-clocked 256MB 9800Pro or a 9800 XT?

And you should read some of the reviews on HardOCP sometime as even they call the 9800XT not much more than an overpriced overclocked 9800Pro 256Meg;)
Overdrive is essentualy nothing more than hype the DRRII isnt making any dramatic diffrences at all maybe 3% to 4% so yes they are overpriced 9800Pro's ho i almost forgot unless you like paying 100 extra for hardware monitoring :p
