9800pro issue. BAD ARTIFACTS!!!help!

a friend recently RMAed a 9800pro and offered to sell the one that returned to me so i bought it. well i installed the card and everything is going good. well later i start getting these BAD artifacts and colors everywhere. it looks like the rainbow in my screen but like fiberoptics. well specs of the PC are:
mobile 2500+ @3200+
abit nf7-s
512 corsair pc3200 value select
wdd 80g SATA
lite on cdrw/dvd
aspire case

well my friend says its cause i have the cpu OCed and that might have messed the card up. could that be it? i backed the proc back down to 1.8 and im still getting BAD artifacts. the desktop looks fine. these artifacts only happen with something like the ati demo like the gargoyle 3d image and gameplay like CS. does anyone know off hand if my mobo has an AGP lock enabled? any kind of help/imput is appreciated. thanks.
 
also i hav e another hdd and the vid card is connected on the same molex as that one. oh and running the stock 350w psu that came with the case. just extra info if that matters. please help
 
9800 is major power hog....use seperate connector... but new PSU might be needed.... MINIMUM is Fortron 350W from Newegg....I'd suggest the 530W Fortron, or the 550W SuperFlower from Directron. Dont by Antec less than 510W, or any toher garbage, lots of "500watt" supplies out there are just BS overrated 300's.

Cooling.... 9800 can get mighty hot... test with a case fan setup to blow directly over the 9800 temporarily.

Fiddle with AGP voltage in bios...try 1.5 1.6 1.7 settings for any change.

use WPCRSET to set Dev0 Bus30 Func0 offset 0D to "60" hex, and 0,30,0, offset 1B to "FF" hex. These are the AGP controller and bus latencies.... ATI cards like those settings. Also, set the "Alpha" settings using WPCRSET....default from ABit is too tight.

Dev0 Bus0 Func1, offset 94 = "60", 95 = "35", 96 = "63", 97 = "65" will probably increase your stability.
 
Your friend may have sold you his origonal card (instead of RMA'ing it) after he fucked it up. Maybe, maybe not just check it out.
 
no i know he RMAed it. i was there whenever he recieved the card. new development today though. i pulled the card and started looking at this HSF. the darn thing wasnt touching the GPU. wtf!!?!?! came right off after i took the 2 screws off. ok so now i know what did it. it had to have overheated. ok now the question is... did i fry my card? i have some extra thermal paste that i used on my cpu hsf that i can stick on there and try to see if that works. is there anyway the card could have been permanently damaged? thanks for the help. :)
 
also will adding my own thermal paste void the warrenty? he still has the warranty for the card and we are thinking about RMAing it again because the HSF came like that from ATI. we did nothing to the card before install so it probably got messed up in shipping or something. thanks again. ;)
