9800pro + fog = mouselag

Okay, I'm really getting irritated.

Specs:
xp2500
512
9800pro
abit nf7s

About two months ago I got a 9800pro. I fired up ET, map was railgun. The entire map is in solid fog. I got so much mouselag it was ridiculous--completely unplayable. Note, I was previously playing on a GF4 4200 and everything was great. I didn't change any settings. (The current ATI driver at the time fixed the ET issue from the last version.) So I figure I was busy with other things, I just wouldn't play ET and would deal with it later.

So yesterday I decide to give Far Cry a shot. First things first, I remove my catalysts as per the ATI site and grab the latest version. Start the game on moderate graphics settings. The first bit has fog, ugghh. I get through the starting tunnels, the fog/mouselag goes away. The game is liquid smooth. I end up inside a METAL PIPE and there is the "dusty room" effect, ie, fog. Instant mouselag. While I'm getting shot at. Unplayable

So now my problem is no longer driver or game specific. I don't know what else to try. "Ohh, your settings are too high, change this, change that." Well, I was playing ET on a GF4 and it was perfect and I had ZERO problems. Pop the radeon in and instant mouselag. There is no way that the GF4 should outperform the 9800pro in ANY situation, at the exact same graphics options configurations no less.

This is sort of frustrating. I get a nice video card and I can't play FPSes.

Anyone have any ideas?

Have you got the latest version of DirectX? I know ET is OpenGL but it couldn't hurt.

Chipset drivers? Have you tried running your mouse at USB if it's PS/2 or PS/2 if it's USB?

did you do a driver cleaner when changing cards? Maybe you still have some nvidia drivers in there making it funky for ati
I would reinstall the chipset drivers too

Im taking a wild guess here, does your motherboard have an nVidia chipset or anything? I have heard of those occaisionally causing trouble with ATI cards, unless you have things set right.

Give it some driver cleaner.. that should do the trick.. then try the reformat if it doesn't work. No sense doing more work than you need to.

It might also be your memory, 512 of what? I know Far Cry just begs to be run at 1 gig at least.

Traditional fog rendering is slow on ATi cards... Always has been.

Most games let you pick between the different types though some force the "Nvidia" type fog.

Don't use exponential fog, use table fog or no fog at all, for smoke effects, make sure its using alpha effects (with any luck, the far superior and uberfast pixel/shader fog)

Warning: No fog at all is sometimes considered cheating when playing FPS games.

I find fog as being heavily overused in most games... If I wanted that smoky effect, I'd move to LA or NewYork and wait for rushour.

I dont get any fog problems at all :s even in cs it takes 5-6 smoke nades to slow me down to anything under 99fps

LOL well that's understandable, you are talking about an old and crappy looking game so of course it won't slow ya down. But yes Far Cry has lots of lag making it very hard to aim even @ moderate settings on my 9800XT. Playable, very playable, but it's still annoying. Where is the R420 or NV40 at!? :p

Far Cry has not been released yet has it? I suspect it will run much smoother once it is. Someone was saying the graphics it in aren't much different than BF:V's, in some cases better, others worse. BF:V runs fine, so perhaps you're dealing with buggy/inefficient code in a beta?

I dunno, I haven't really been following FarCry too closely, I'll wait till its out.

Actually I have farcry
I run it at either 800x600 everything full blast or 1024x768 with most htings on full, and I get no smoke lag from that either.
