Allright, a friend of mine's 9800 Pro had its fan die. Could you please link me to a recomended HSF replacement and a guide on how to install it. Thanks a whooooooooooole bunch.

The best of the vga silencer is the fact that it pushes the hot air out of your case from a pci slot hole.

I went for it, i love it. Go for it.

Only got an extra 10mhz on the core from the VGA silencer. I might have installed it wrong or something...not sure.

He's never taken the HSF off of a video card, especially this one where it has push-pins (it may be the fan that has push pins, I'm not taking mine out to check) How would he take the HSF off without killing his core?

That was a problem(atleast for me) I ended up cutting off the pushpins, but later I heard you have to push them in and then squeeze the other end and slide it out.

the pushpins on my 9800 are really easy to take off... they are brass and you just squeese them and they come off..

The silencer its not meant for extreme card cooling... It just cools more efficently and quietly than the stock cooler. It brings your case temps down too, because of the exhaust. But for the card itself, it wont help your OCs. Its just not meant to...

iim lookng to buy one of those, is it hard to install it myself? Im not quite sure how to do it

EDIT: saw a thread for this below, scratch what i said

Compared to a ZM80C-HP, how well does the silencer cool?
Also, if I go with the Zalman, I'll be cutting a blowhole in the side of my case right above the video card to mount a 120mm fan blowing air out the side. How loud is the fan compared to a Vantec Stealth?

hes not looking to OC, i'd just like to know a decent replacement HSF, and how to get the stock one off. How do you get the HSF off without damaging the core?

its extremely easy, theres no way you could break the core unless you are extremely careless or trying to break the core.

yeah...That doesn't explain it. I've never taken the HSF off of a video card. Dont they use like artic silver epoxy or whatever it is, it makes it stick? I don't know. Or is it just like a HSF on a CPU?

*bump*
Both the VGA Silencer and the Zalman ZM80C are apparently popular choices, but which cools better? Which is quieter? (When compared with the zalman optional fan attached obviously)

Just installed an Arctic Cooling VGA Silencer yesterday on my Sapphire 9800Pro 256MB card. Turn your card over to the other side where there is no fan and look for the push pins. With needle nose pliers squeeze the longest sides together for each pin and slide the HS/fan thing off your card, but you might want to unplug the 3-pin fan connector first (take note of the which wires are in which position before you unplug it). The Silencer will have more specific instructions on how to install, but DON'T put Arctic Silver paste on until you are ready; their instructions say to do it earlier which is rather odd.

Next (some details left out), remove back plate off video card, clean off old paste with tissues and then alcohol to get the rest, place guard where video card face plate was, line up Silencer on video card and know where screw holes are, Arctic Silver 3 on GPU, then Silencer, carefully turn over and screw back plate down, screw new face plate in place, plug in fan connector per previous setup (black wire where black was on old connector, red wire........, etc.; there may only be two wires instead of 3 this time).

One strange thing I did notice and I was warned about it ahead of time, is that I now have a 1/2" gap between my faceplate and the edge of the exhaust. Is there any way to seal this gap up easily?
